(APR 30) WBAN is proud to announce that
Melissa "Huracan" Hernandez has been named our "May 2007 Fighter of
the month".
Hernandez just recently defeated Layla McCarter in a rematch, after
she lost to McCarter in their first fight.
Hernandez represents women's boxing in a way that if we had more
fighters that had her guts and tenacity it most certainly would
bring the sport to a higher level.
So many times we see boxers who hide behind promoters, give
themselves names they do not live up to (does using the well-worn
name of "Million Dollar baby" ring a bell?); we have boxers
related to other famous male boxers who have such well-orchestrated
boxing careers that boxing fans really do not know how they would
fare in a real boxing match that is actually competitive; and we
have boxers who when they do lose to a boxer, they do not dare to
rematch, even though it would be a great fight for boxing fans to
see, and great for the sport. Instead they run to lesser
opponents for that almighty pristine record they are trying to
maintain.
Hernandez has fought some very tough competition since turning pro,
and she is fearless against the more experienced and ranked boxers.
[WBAN would like to make an honorable mention to Brooke Dierdorff
who defeated Mia St. Johns this month]
