Sixteen-year-old welterweight Irasema de la
Fuente will have home advantage when she climbs into the outdoor
ring on the terrace of the Hotel Calinda in the historic centre
of Veracruz (Mexico) tomorrow evening for what we are told will
be an explosive encounter with 22-year-old Cristina Ramos Mora
of the Federal District, as part of the "Gran Noche de
Estrellas" bill promoted by Altamirano Asimismo.
The morale of
de la Fuente, of whom great things are expected, took something
of a knock in early February when she became the 13th straight
victim of "The She-Wolf", 19-year-old Zulina 'La Loba' Muñoz of
the Federal District, in the Estadio Carlos Serdán, referee
José Guadalupe García pulling the two youngsters apart 1 minute
and 50 seconds into the fourth round. But there's no shame in
losing to Muñoz – "the new sensation of female boxing in
Mexico", as Notiver described her at the time – who, according
to Boxrec, has won all but one of her thirteen fights to date
inside the distance. Tomorrow night's opponent, who so far has
won seven and lost three, should give Irasema a chance to put
that setback behind her and justify the faith the local boxing
community has in her. At the presentation yesterday in the
Zorrito Altamirano gymnasium, the two women shook hands and
wished each other luck.
Kicking off the
action at 19:30 will be another Veracruz-Federal District duel
at flyweight between "The Black Panther", Cristina “La Pantera
Negra” Coderre, another of the state's young talents, and Andrea
Chacón.
Both fights
will be over four rounds. The weigh-in, also in the Hotel
Calinda, is at 11 o'clock.
