Molly McConnell scored her 6th win in an
impressive fashion Saturday night at the Emerald Queen Casino.
McConnell faced Kita Watkins (2-1-0, 1KO) in what was scheduled as a
6 round fight.
Watkins stepped out in round one and threw a flurry of punches at
McConnell. That tactic kept McConnell backing up in the early part
of the round, and occasionally, Watkins did catch McConnell, though
apparently not hard enough to sting her. Watkins plan appeared to be
to attack McConnell's head. However, too often her shots were wide
looping punches. McConnell slipped most of them and blocked the
others.
In the second round McConnell settled in to a rhythm in which she
poked jabs between Watkins arms. When Watkins rose her hands to
protect her head, McConnell dropped to punish Watkins's body.
McConnell's accurate jab and right hands to the body almost took
Watkins out of the fight in the 2nd. She was hurt, but tough enough
to stay up and continue fighting.
Between the 2nd and 3rd the doctor looked hard at Watkins, but he
decided she was ok to continue, at least for a while. McConnell
continued the assault in the 3rd. This time, no matter how hard she
tried to move forward, Watkins could not answer. The referee stopped
the action to let the doctor have another look, and they decided
Watkins should not continue.
McConnell scored the TKO victory at 1:08 of the third round. She is
now 6-1; Watkins evens her record at 2-2.
