(FEB 9) IRVINE - Before 1,410 fans and
its 13th straight sellout, fight fans showed their appreciation for
a solid five bout card, by showering the ring not once, but twice,
at Thursday night’s Irvine Marriott Battle In The Ballroom boxing
show.
It was another great night of action for promoter Roy Englebrecht,
as he lifted the curtain on the 23rd year of boxing at the Marriott,
and undefeated Rhonda Luna set the stage for her world’s title
challenge, with a hard fought majority decision win over Sosadea
Razo. Fans throw over $200 into the ring to show their appreciation
for the two females, who traded punches for the entire six rounds.
Razo, with her looping punches, bloodied Luna’s nose in the second
round, but Luna’s right cross consistently found the mark and by the
third round (5-8) Razo’s right side was swelling. Both fighters
staggered each other in the fifth and sixth rounds with toe-to-toe
exchanges. Scoring was 59-54, 57-57, 60-54.
With the win, Luna goes
to 12-0 and now faces IFBA champion Kelsey Jeffries for her title on
March 22nd on The Best Damn Sports Show card in New Mexico.
Not to be outdone by the women, (2-0) Fernando Quintero earned a
tough majority decision win over Fresno’s Yoshi Fuji, who drops to
(2-2). Again, fans showered the ring with money, as both fighters
exchanged blows for four rounds with the scoring 39-37, 39-37,
38-38.
MMA heavyweight artist Mighty Mo Siliga went to 2-1 with a first
round KO of 0-4 William Jackson; Oxnard heavyweight Victor Barragan
raised his record to 7-1 with a unanimous decision over 3-7 Cornell
Davis; and in the opening bout of then night, in an upset, 0-1
Robert Ryan fought to a draw over 2-0 Armando Ramirez, with many in
the crowd thinking Ryan deserved his first win.
Englebrecht’s next show will be a first for the Battle In The
Ballroom and maybe a first in the fight business, as he will
introduce the first ever MMA and Boxing Doubleheader. Sunday, April
1st will be the inaugural Battle In The Ballroom MMA show, followed
the next night by the regular Battle In The Ballroom boxing show.
These two shows will be held in conjunction with the five day
session of Fight Promoter University III.
