(JULY 29) The latest
news stories swirling around the globe is that Officials in
Johannesburg, South Africa are now attempting to woo Laila Ali
back to South Africa, for her originally scheduled (and
canceled) fight against Gwendolyn O’Neil that was set for
August 5th. The fight was dropped after a promoter’s
failure to secure funding for this fight, according to the news
media.
Ali had flown to South Africa last week to get prepared to
fight O’Neil, when the last word WBAN had received from the
Ali camp was that the fight was off---and they were heading
back to the U.S.A.
According to Reuters, promoter Joe Manyathi of Sta-Trade has
a reputation for offering empty promises of historic bouts
to be staged in South Africa. Does the Mike Tyson vs.
Lennox Lewis ring a bell?
It was stated on
EURWeb, that there was evidence that
surfaced that the sport minister's signature had been forged on
documents seeking the support of sport authorities in Cape Town.
They have also reported that a “new Sponsor” has come forward, and
they are now trying to get Ali to return to fight O’Neil.
