The presence in the front row of
Panamanian boxing legend Roberto ‘Manos de Piedra’ Duran was not
enough to lift Shantal Martínez, who hails from the western
province of Chiriquí, to victory in Antón on Saturday evening
when she clashed with Carolina Odalis Álvarez of Venezuela in
what Boxeo Panama described as ‘one of the most eagerly awaited
contests of the evening’ – the judges scoring the fight: Marcos
Torres 29-28, Ignacio Robles 29-28 and Roberto Vernaza 30-27
unanimously in favour of the visitor.
Álvarez, whose sobriquets ‘Fiera
China’ and ‘La Fiera’ attest to her ferocity, has been fighting
since December in Germany, where so far she has stopped two
opponents, Lucie Hornakova of Slovakia and Albena Altseva of
Bulgaria, as well as holding former kickboxer Bettina Volker to
a draw. With this win – both women weighed in at 110 pounds -
she improves to 5-0-1 (2 KOs).
