(JUNE 23) Nongmai Sor Siriporn, 28, who
in November challenged Japan’s Nanako Kikuchi unsuccessfully for the
WBC women’s minimumweight title, has received a full pardon from the
King of Thailand, King Bhumiphol Adulyadej and is now free. Sor
Siriporn, whose real name is Wannee Chaisena, was serving a
four-year sentence for the sale of methamphetamines. She was
released on Tuesday along with 202 other prisoners, including three
other women who participated in the prisons’ boxing program. Sor
Siriporn plans to continue her boxing career and will begin training
at the Singwancha camp this coming Monday. Her next fight is
scheduled for sometime in August or September in Hong Kong. Of the
four boxers released, Nongmai Sor Siriporn is in all likelihood the
only woman who will continue with her pugilistic aspirations.
Fellow inmate Siriporn Sor Siriporn dropped a ten–round unanimous
decision to Kikuchi back in May and is still incarcerated. She is
scheduled to be released in 1-2 years.
