(JUNE 17) Jenny Houts of
Portland, Oregon, has accepted the challenge, and will fight Amateur
sensation Dyana Ornalez who makes her pro debut. Houts is 1-0
as a pro, and stands 5'8"---four inches taller than Ornalez who has
not been easy to match with her Amateur credentials.
The bout is set for 4 rounds at
134 pounds, a compromise weight in order to make the fight.
Houts comes down six pounds while Ornalez comes up six. |

The other women's bout is a six round
affair to be fought at 116 pounds. Kaleisha West, 18 years
old, now 3-0 in her young pro career will fight Maria Contreras,
30, of Houston, 1-4 as a pro, but has fought much tougher
competition than Kaleisha. Contreras is a stablemate of Rocky Juarez
who recently lost a controversial decision for the world Jr.
Lightweight title to Marco Antonio Barrera. West is trained by her
father Juan.
The main event promises to be a classic, with Jesus "Chuy" Rodriguez
(8-2 Salinas) meeting the experienced Sergio de la Torre (10-8-2
Escondido Ca.) This battle at 138 pounds set for 8 rounds is a
crossroads bout for both fighters who are each coming off loses to
highly touted undefeated fighters with a combined record of 29-0.
Rodriguez is 4-1 since ending a prison term one year ago in his
comeback. De la Torre, who was the 1997 US amateur Champion has the
reputation of always fighting the toughest fighters in his division.
The two largest individuals ever to collide in a RIOT event will
meet in each fighters pro debut. 6'5" 265 pound Keith Spencer of
Oxnard is active Navy stationed in Oxnard with a trip to Iraq
scheduled in 6 months to teach servicemen combat techniques. His
opponent is Julius Askew of Bakersfield who also spent 4 years in
the Navy, stationed in San Diego. Askew stands 5'11troups and tips
the scales at 260.
An intriguing 134 pound battle finds the nephew of local legend
Georgie "The Hammer" Garcia in action. Gabe Garcia, fighting out of
Glendale Arizona is 2-1 as a pro, and he meets tough Manuel Delgado
of Imperial Valley who is 1-2 as a professional. Georgie will be
work Gabe's corner. Delgado is a stablemate of Kaleisha West.
Another bonus bout will be added to the fight card which will have
over 30 rounds and 6 bouts on the card.
The Monterey Conference Center, Downtown Monterey will be the
elegant venue for the show which is slated for Saturday, July 8th.
