Team Fiorentino Speaks out
June 14, 2006

(JUNE 14) On May 18th, in Providence, Rhode Island, there was an IWBF World Lightweight Title fight between Jamie “the Hurricane” Clampitt and fellow Rhode Islander Missy “the Fury” Fiorentino. Fiorentino won the bout by a  unanimous (97-94, 96-94,96-94) decision. WBAN was told that this was a fantastic bout between these two boxers. WBAN's coverage of the bout

An article was published on June 2, entitled, "ON THE EDGE: What Were They Watching?"  Link to story  in which there were public comments made in this article in regards to the Fiorentino-Clampitt bout.  Team Fiorentino has contacted WBAN to address these comments.

TEAM FIORENTINO

Comment from Article:
"To many observers and media, there was no winner. It should have been called a draw at worst. Clampitt had the last two rounds. But for Jaime to lose the title belt on a unanimous decision on that night, is only something that can happen in Providence."

Team Fiorentino: I would just like to say that there were observers and media on both sides. If Jamie would have won, there would be no discussion on whether it should have been a draw or not. Yes, Jamie won 2-3 rounds the most, when a fight comes to a decision and it is a title fight, no matter what state you are fighting there is a winner and a loser and Jamie lost and Missy was awarded the belt.

Comment from Article:  It certainly didn’t hurt Fiorentino’s chances that Clark Sammartino, a relative of Fiorentino trainer Peter Manfredo, Sr., was judging the fight. Hmmm..I wonder how that happened? It was true that Clampitt did not abide by her original fight plan of avoiding Missy and striking on the run. She chose to stand and slug it out. But with every head shot that "The Fury" got in, Jaime came back with an equal dose of the same.

Team Fiorentino: Clark Sammartino is no relative of Peter Manfredo's, the Rhode Island commission doesn't allow family members to judge. Before a statement as above is made, the source should truly make sure the acquisition is correct. A member from the Clampitt team was very upset at the weigh-in because he was told from the commissioner that no one was allowed anywhere near the score cards as he usually does when Jamie fights. Jamie did chose to stand and slug it out and Jamie couldn't take the pure pressure that Missy put on her, Jamie did counter back but not nearly as many punches as Missy threw.

Comment from Article: "I did not follow my game plan after the 2nd round," said Clampitt. "I don't know why, but I just stopped and began slugging. At the beginning of the 3rd round I hurt my right hand again and it kind of threw me off I guess. I fought a stupid fight, I fought her fight, and still did pretty good as alot of people thought I either won or earned a draw."

Team FiorentinoHere Jamie admits that she didn't fight her fight, she fought Missy's and couldn't handle it. There are many woman who fight with broken bones and don't use that as an excuse for their loss. It doesn't really matter what Jamie thinks, it is what the judges saw and they saw it in Missy's favor.

Comment from Article:  "I thought a fighter had to take the belt from a champion, but when you fight an Italian fighter in Rhode Island I guess you have to do more than that. I was warned about that beforehand but I thought I would be protected from that kind of stuff. I guess I was wrong. "

Team Fiorentino: I don't believe that nationality has anything to do with this, on the same card BoBo Starnino (Italian) won his fight, BoBo is from Jamies camp, he trains with her, they are not saying much for their own team mate. Missy clearly took the belt from Jamie and she can't except that she lost to a featherweight. Jamie had all the advantages, she was 10-15 lbs heavy, had 4 inch weight advantage and Missy came in as the underdog.

Comment from Article:  I take my hat off to Missy, we put on a great show. Missy and her mom (also her manager) came up to me after and showed a lot of class.

Team FiorentinoNot once did Missy and Jamie disrespect one another, Jamie made a statement on a radio station where she said Missy and myself have nothing personal against one another, every one around us is making it personal. Not once did Missy bad mouth Jamie not even when she came in overweight at the weigh-ins for a title fight. So I really don't see the hostility that the Clampitt team has now that the fight is over. A true champion should act as one, win or lose.

WBAN checked out Jaime Clampitt's website, and she had the following posted:

"While I have not yet decided on my future in boxing, I would just like to say that Missy and I put on a great show. I once again injured my right hand, however I felt I gutted it out and earned no less than a draw."

Clampitt also referred to the above mentioned article
Link to story as being her first public comments about the fight.
