(APR 29) Carolina Marcela Gutiérrez
Gaite, the undefeated Argentinian bantamweight, will be the next
challenger for Jackie Nava's WBC super bantamweight title, after
negotiations to offer a rematch to Leona Brown of the USA fell
through. The fight will take place on the 20th May in Los Cabos,
Baja California.
Gutiérrez ("Chapita")'s last outing, in
which she disputed the UBC bantamweight title with the Colombian
Mónica "la Terrible" Acosta Siris — for whom Luis Bello Díaz, the
head of the Colombian boxing federation and UBC, who accompanied her
to Argentina, was claiming a record of 9-2-2 — ended dramatically
when the Colombian, a mother of three, turned her back in surrender
only seconds from the end of the fifth, after a fourth round that
had seen both women suffering nosebleeds : Acosta from a hard right
and Gutiérrez — according to Gustavo Zamudio, who covered the event
for La Mañana de Córdoba — as a result of repeated head butts from
the Colombian.
Retribution in the fifth was brutal.
With Chapita's powerful right hand repeatedly finding the mark and
no towel forthcoming, it was left to La Terrible — by now almost out
on her feet — to take the initiative and (as Zamudio put it) "have
mercy on herself".
Both women, coincidentally, came from huge families, with 14 and 9
siblings respectively. Acosta, who was born in Gabriel García
Márquez's hometown of Aracataca and is married to another boxer,
Jairo Siris, was already proclaiming herself the champion at the
pre-match press conference — adding, bizarrely, that she was "a
woman of few words".
Two, in the event, were all she needed.
Despite Gutiérrez's impressive 10-0 (7 KOs ) record, the champion's
manager, Miguel Reyes, was confident yesterday that Nava would send
her home with her tail between her legs. "Right now, Jackie's
running 30 to 40 minutes a day as well as putting in almost two
hours of gym work in the evenings. She's looking really strong and
eager to defend her title. All of us are confident she'll emerge
from the fight with her arm raised."
The champion's 13-1-1 record (8 KOs) has certainly been obtained
against more impressive opposition than that of Gutiérrez : WBAN's
Dee Williams ranks her #1 in the world and the challenger is not
ranked in the top ten.
Recently Nava decided to put on hold a promising career as an
architect (she graduated first in her class from the University of
Tijuana) to concentrate on boxing. There will be time enough for
building later. Right now, for the 26-year-old Mexican, demolition
is the name of the game.
