(DEC 7) Fontana’s Heather Percival has signed to meet Las Vegas fighter
Melinda Cooper in Palm Springs on Saturday, January 28. Percival fought for the
bantamweight world title last month and fell short against Teri
Cruz. Now she steps in against one of the best female fighters
in the world Cooper. I’m
glad they took the fight,” said James Pena, manager and trainer
of Cooper. “It’s going to be a great fight.”
Larry Ramirez, who trains and manages
Percival and amateur standout Heather Heep, said his fighter understands
now what it takes to win against elite competition.
“Heather has the
conditioning to fight against anyone,” said Ramirez. “Conditioning is
going to be the key to this fight.”
Percival, a fair sized bantamweight, said her mistakes will not be
repeated against Cooper.
“I was afraid of getting tired,” Percival said of her loss to Cruz in
Utah last month. “When the fight finished, I felt like I could have gone
five more rounds.”
Cooper captured the IBA and WIBA flyweight world title with a ninth
round stoppage over Anissa Zamarron in Rancho Mirage almost a year ago.
