(SEPT 30) Oxnard’s
Crystal Morales meets Maywood’s Liz Medel making her pro debut in a
four-round featherweight match in the City of Commerce, a small suburb
across the bridge from East Los Angeles.
Trained by former junior lightweight world champion Robert Garcia and
aided by current lightweight world title-holder Mia Rosales St. John,
the determined Morales (2-2-1) intends to reverse her record and wants
to start the roll against Medel at Stevens Steakhouse in a fight card
promoted by KO Productions on Friday night. It won’t be easy.
Medel is a former amateur standout with numerous bouts and should be a
major test for Morales, who makes a sour face when discussing her
record.“I’m going to win,” said Morales, who trains at the famous La
Colonia Boxing Club in downtown Oxnard. “I’ve been working hard every
day.”
Maywood’s Medel has been fighting for six years and made it all the way
to the US Championship finals before losing a close decision earlier in
the year. She’s proven many times capable of beating anyone amateur or
pro.
Morales has been sparring with St. John and others to prepare for this
Friday night bout. She’s anxious for a fight.
“I have great sparring with Mia and some of the guys at La Colonia,”
Morales said Thursday night. “I learn more and more each day. I’ve
improved a lot since I started boxing professionally.”
Morales fought as an amateur for two years before making the jump to the
pro ranks. “I’m ready for her,” said Morales.
