(DEC 27) On December 24, 2005,
at the
Kenya International Conference Centre, in Nairobi, Kenya,
In another
questionable World title bout that took place in 2005, Conjestina Achieng won the vacant WBF middleweight world title
against winless Argentinean
Guillermina Fernandez. Fernandez came into the world title bout,
with a 0-3-0 record,
listed as a "welterweight", not
middleweight in any of her previous bouts. (Both Boxrec.com and
WBAN's records had her with no wins on her record).
Fernandez is not ranked with WBAN, IFBA, WBC, WIBA, and
it can be safely assumed not any other credible organization.

In this obvious mismatch, Achieng stopped Fernandez
1:42 seconds in the first round of a scheduled 10 round bout. Fernandez had
been stopped twice in her three previous losses from her past fights.
It was reported in the local news sources that boxing
fans, who had turned up early for the event, ended up waiting four hours
before the event took place. Apparently it was a “purse” issue that needed
to be resolved when the promoter had not paid the boxers. Another news
source reported that Achieng and Fernandez had refused to go to the fight
venue before receiving their fee from promoters Solid Rock Promotions. They
were paid $5,000 each.
One reporter describing the brief one-round
bout said, “Kenya's Conjestina Achieng drove her fans into ecstacy with her
electrifying first round demolition job on Argentina's Giullermina
Fernandez.” That is a pretty good description of a non-competitive
mismatch.
(WBAN welcomes any additional
information on Fernandez if she does have any other additional fights on
record. We will need documentation to support that information).
