Kelli Cofer, is a 123-lb fighter born
on March 4, 1978. Her father, Jim Cofer, at his Golden Lotus Kickboxing
and Martial Arts School in Willard, Ohio, trains her. Kelli also trains
with Mickey Scodova of Mansfield, Ohio (former WKA Super Middleweight
Champion of the United States). Her original interest in boxing was honed
by the late Henry Russel when Kelli and her father went to him in
preparation for their early kickboxing matches. Although her original
intent was to pursue kickboxing, the action was not as consistent as the
bouts available in boxing.
As an early fighter, Cofer was a
full-time engineering student, still maintaining a 4.0 GPA into her
current senior year. Her training was very sporadic to accommodate her
classes and was mostly done solo as she was too far from her trainers to
get regular coaching. Although the amateur kickboxing interest had been
actively pursued while in high school, the boxing was started in an
attempt to supplement a scarce college income. Between November of 1998
and March of 2000, Cofer was able to win Toughman contests in Ohio:
Mansfield, Toledo, and Marion. This peaked her interest in boxing.
Throughout this fighting interval
she also transferred from the University of Cincinnati to the Ohio State
University. Her previous academics had gotten her intern positions at the
aeronautical company Pratt Whitney, where she was a material engineer for
the RD-180 project, a joint venture between the Russian and United States
space programs (NASA). After this intern she decided to transfer to OSU in
order to pursue her degree with more medical focus, concentrating on
biomedics and prosthetics. Currently, she is a senior, but is not enrolled
full-time in order to concentrate on both school and boxing.
