Lucia Rijker
vs.
Chevelle Hallback

Memorial Coliseum,
Corpus Christi, TX, USA
 March 22, 1997
PPV-TV fight report
for Women's Boxing Page
by Tom de Napoli

This was the second fight on the Nelson-Hernandez card.

A bald, very intense looking Chevelle Hallback, at 1 and 0 with 1 KO, fired across the ring at Lucia in the first round. A good strategy for someone with more than smother punches. Unfortunately smother punches were all she had. Lucia seemed stunned but still landed the better shots mostly back foot hooks, back foot right counters and a few hard front foot rights to the body. The first round went to Chevelle 10-9 on her wild attacks. Amazing!

In the second round Lucia found the key...jump forward and pop away with a stiff super accurate jab. She popped a wild Chevelle at will and then started to slam shots to the body. Occasionally Chevelle still landed a wild clubbing overhand right. 10-9 Rijker.

By the third round, Lucia started her combinations with nasty intentions, drilling Chevelle at will and spinning to the side before Chevelle could tie her up. Masterful moves. Her occasional body shots didn't have the big wind up of a Christy Martin but every one moved a tough looking Hallback backwards. Again a 10-9 Lucia round.

The fourth round was pot shot time. Lucia pushed a frozen left arm out and into Hallback's face. While everyone thinks this is strictly a range finder move, it's actually a test of the opponent's savvy. Hallback failed to respond and seemed Cobra-ized ( the scared frozen look when a cobra hisses and the victim freezes) . Lucia popped her with hard jabs to the face and sucker left hooks off the jab.

Chevelle was reduced to wild, go for broke swings, bolo overhand rights that she winged while she ducked and corner clutching. Sure signs of a scared amateur. Lucia was merciless and pounded at least 5 hard shots to the body. Again a 10-9 Lucia round and foreboding of things to come.

The fifth began with Lucia shuffling her feet back and forth itching to scoot across the ring. Meanwhile an exhausted Hallback stayed on her stool for an extra 3 seconds.

Bad sign. Lucia fired away at will with Hallback getting a wild arm punch but not even nicking Lucia.

Then Lucia exploded with her left hook-right cross and Hallback was flying backwards landing on the canvas with a dazed look.

She got up and quickly backed herself on the ropes, suicide. Lucia fired away and dropped a very outclassed Hallback over the middle rope.

KO in round 5!

My evaluation is that Lucia still fights very upright as kickboxers do. Her chin is way too high. A bobbing and weaving Martin will land her shots but she is composed and she's intense.

I take her at 10-9 odds against Martin because she has a better body and is definitely the better athlete. She is really a attractive women that I think is twice as sexy as Christy Martin!

The commentators sorta knew their stuff. They made a good point, women's boxing will succeed when there are fewer mismatches. This was a mismatch but these guys thought it was an even struggle. They missed the boat by a mile.

Lucia is definitely a good looking athlete with a lot of savvy and great conditioning.

Martin gave away her hand when she questioned Lucia's gender; she (Martin) is intimidated by Lucia's outstanding conditioning. Too bad, because Christy is gonna take some body shots if she ever does face Lucia in the ring.
