(NOV 27) Thirteen more
winners were crowned today after the exciting finals at the IBA
Youth World Boxing Championships in La Nucía, Spain.
Megan De Cler from the Netherlands started strongly her fight
against India’s Ravina Ravina in the women’s 63kg category.
However, thanks to strong support from her seconds in the
corner, the Indian boxer was able to defend and attack in turn.
After the bout review, Ravina was declared the winner with a 4-3
split decision.
‘My coaches and my confidence helped me today,’ Ravina said
after the fight was over.
Javokhir Ummataliev from Uzbekistan met with Nurbek Mursal from
Kazakhstan in 67kg, and he took the first two rounds
confidently. In the third, he was able to continue his winning
strategy. After the verdict, split decision 4-1, Ummataliev
performed an impressive somersault and then took a flag of
Uzbekistan.
Kazakhstan’s Bakyt Seidish was fighting against Carlotta
Schuenemann from Germany in women’s 66kg. Both athletes were
supported well by the tribunes, and Bakyt could take this bout
after the judges scored the fight 4-0 in her favor.
In men’s 71kg, Hungarian Levente Gemes went in the ring to fight
against Fazliddin Erkinboev. Gemes won two of his fights in
Spain by KO, but today Erkinboev was stronger and didn’t give a
chance to the Hungarian to take this gold.
Veronika Nakota from Ukraine and Aziza Zokirova from Uzbekistan
fought for the title in the women’s 70kg weight category. Both
were very active and exchanged good punches in the first round.
The opinions of the judges were split, and after a bout review,
the Ukrainian celebrated the victory.
‘I am full of emotions, today all worked well. I was waiting for
the result of the fight with certain worries, but I didn’t think
it was the bout review. I had three fights at this World
Championships with very good rivals, I’ve never met all of them.
It was a great experience. I hope this final fight was
spectacular, too. Now I will move to elite boxing and will train
hard to achieve my goals in this age group,’ Nakota said.
In a boxing fight between Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan in men’s
75kg, Daulet Tulemissov met with Turabek Khabibullaev. The third
round was a decisive one. Tulemissov was given a warning, and
the Uzbek celebrated the victory with a split decision of 4-0.
In a close fight, Ukrainian Mykyta Zasenok and Rakhmatullo
Boymatov from Uzbekistan didn’t give up until the last gong. The
winner was determined by bout review, and Zasenok celebrated the
second success of the day for the Ukrainian team.
‘This victory was tough. I fought with boxers from Kazakhstan,
Uzbekistan and Brazil, all of them were very well-prepared and
skilled. I hadn’t realized yet that I won, but I have a lot of
emotions inside,’ Zasenok commented.
Norwegian finalist Sunniva Hofstad faced Colombian Angie
Carolina Solano Vanegas. Hofstad had an unusual style, which
helped her to overcome her rival without problems and get this
gold in women’s 75kg with a large margin.
‘Incredible! It was such a great fight with a great opponent. I
am so happy with my championships, these were the best fights
I’ve ever fought. I was heading for the gold, but I wasn’t
expecting to win so many rounds with 10:8 and 10:7. It’s such an
amazing feeling. My style is the way that makes me happy, I have
fun in the ring. It’s impossible to learn this style, it should
come from within,’ Hofstad said after her victory.
In a fight between Italian Paolo Caruso and Cuban Ronny Alvarez
Noa in men’s 86kg, the bout review took place to determine the
winner. The split decision of 3:2 was in favor of Cuba.
In women’s 81kg Amber Moss Birch from England fought against
Uzbekistan’s Oltinoy Sotimboyeva. The referee stopped the
contest in the first round after two successful attacks from
Birch.
‘I am over the moon,’ Birch claimed. ‘It wasn’t a plan to win so
quick, I was going to box and outskill her, but it all was about
a couple of clean punches.’
England’s Damar Thomas is a boxer with a very impressive reach,
competing in men’s 92kg. He fought against Cuban Adrian Fresneda
Ricardo and took a lead on all scorecards after the first round.
However, the Cuban could change his tactics and won clearly the
second round. In the third round, boxers tried their best, but
the Cuban athlete was stronger today. He won by split decision
4:1.
In the fight between Irish Cliona Elizabeth D’Arcy and Indian
Kirti in women’s 81+kg was one of the day highlights. The Indian
was trying to go forward and put pressure on her rival, while
D’Arcy was smarter and worked mostly on her feet and with
counterattacks and used sidesteps. The powerful support of the
tribunes made her keep using a smart strategy and win
unanimously. She told that they prepared this in advance with
coaches.
‘I can’t put these feelings into words! I watched my rival’s
fights and saw that she came forward, so I should try to stay
off and keep angles, that was my main strategy,’ D’Arcy said.
The most anticipated fight of the evening was between Enrico
Itauma from England and Oleksandr Zelenskyi from Ukraine. The
super heavyweight boxers (92+kg) showed a spectacular bout, and
Itauma demonstrated a very strong performance with many powerful
punches giving no chance to his opponent. He won by RSC in the
third round.
