(FEB 12) Mea Motu has made
New Zealand boxing history by beating the 14-year record for
most held New Zealand titles in women's boxing. Mea Motu won her
third New Zealand national title in the third weight division
for the PBCNZ Featherweight title against Ayisha Abied.
It was a special night for boxing
with this being the first boxing event for New Zealand in 2022.
We saw Commonwealth games competitor Magan Maka make her return,
Wendall Stanley fighting in style, Cayden Hope had a major
defeat and of course, the main event that last only one minute
and twenty-five seconds. The live stream started out choppy with
technical issues during the first five fights, however, after
they were sorted, it was smooth sailing.
As always the boxing power couple Isaac and Alina Peach outdid
themselves in these difficult times. Still being able to put on
an event and entertain the people at home with fantastic boxing
from grassroots to professionals.
Tonight was history-making for Mea Motu, but of course, she made
people go wow as she made her entrance to the ring. She walked
to the ring using a song her cousin made for her, for this
special occasion. Mea wore her shiny ring attire that lit up the
room like a disco ball and with ruby red hair, showing that she
is ready for business.
The fight started as both boxers were feeling each other out but
Ayisha trying to find her longer reach, which she has an
advantage over. However, Ayisha landed herself in deep trouble
where she got trapped in the corner with Mea absolutely
unloading onto her. Ayisha tried to get out of the corner, but
when they got to the other side of the ring, Mea landed a
monstrous body shot to drop Ayisha for the first time.
The referee Faiyaz Khan gave the longest 8 count in the world
which seemed more like 15 or 20 seconds, but once it started
again it wasn’t long till Mea landed another atomic bomb to the
body which dropped Ayisha again, forcing the referee to wave off
the fight.
Mea Motu now holds three different New Zealand national titles
in three different commissioning bodies with two titles from the
PBCNZ and one from NZPBA. Mea Motu has broken the record that
former IBF World champion Daniella Smith set 14 years ago for
most New Zealand national titles in the women's division.
This is a big historical moment for Women's boxing in New
Zealand and Maori women in sports. Daniella Smith who set the
record with two New Zealand titles was matched by Lani Daniels
and obviously Mea Motu before breaking the record. All three
women are from Northland and are strong inspirational Maori
Women. The only other female to hold multiple New Zealand
national titles is former WBO World champion Geovana Peres who
held the PBCNZ and NZNBF Light Heavyweight New Zealand national
titles.
What is next for Mea Motu?
She wants to break Sean Sullivans record who holding the most
New Zealand national titles in boxing, which is seven titles
over five different weight divisions.
Mea Motu has two fights lined up already including the third
fight between Michaela Jenkins and of course the ultimate dream
fight against Baby Nansen once Covid levels drop in New Zealand
at Eden Park Stadium.
Mea Motu wants to take on anyone and everyone, she wants to take
on the best.
