New Professional Boxer on the Scene:  Meet Vivian "El Problema" Velazquez-Maldonado!
by Sue TL Fox
April 23, 2020

(APR 23) 5' 4" Vivian "El Problema" Velazquez-Maldonado born on September 22, 1994 in Cidra, Puerto Rico, has fought as an amateur and then turned pro in 2019.  She has accumulated 40 fights as an amateur before turning pro.

She first began boxing at the age of 17 years old, and at that time joined a gym in Cidra, Puerto Rico, under the tutelage of Team sniper, who helped build the foundation of her boxing skills by successfully leading her career as an amateur boxer, therefore, she won multiple tournaments and medals representing her beautiful island, Puerto Rico.

Velazquez had several accomplishments as an amateur that includes some of the following:  She won the championship in June of 2019 with the Wilfredo Gomez Tournament; becoming a national champion in February of 2019; and winning in the Roy Jones Tournament in June of 2018.

When Velazquez turned pro in 2019, she signed with DS Management, that is led by Richard Borges and Jonathan Gaudier.

On December 07, 2019, Velazquez, 110,  made her pro debut, at the Coliseo Pedrin Zorrilla, in San Juan, facing Amarilis Adorno, 110.  The bout was scheduled for four rounds in the flyweight division.

Her opponent---Adorno has been fighting since 2007, and had several professional bouts under her belt when newcomer Velazquez entered the ring for the first time.  Velazquez had a clear win when she defeated Adorno with final judges scores of 40-36, 39-37, and 39-37.  Velazquez is currently 1-0-0 (0KO).

Velazquez told WBAN, "My goal was to look spectacular in my debut on December 7th and we did it, looking good throughout my career as a professional boxer achieving the ultimate goal in boxing, which is to be a world champion."

"To serve as an example to follow, be an inspiration for many young women and being able to create better opportunities for each one of them.  My main goal is to have a successful career, always giving glory to God who guides me, at every step and every victory", added Velazquez.

WBAN would like to say that seeing so far what Velazquez has achieved, with her solid amateur background and now fighting as a pro, she may JUST live up to her ring name "El Problema"!
