Christina Hammer vs. Claressa Shields
December 12, 2018

The clash was one of the most anticipated women’s match ups of recent times before the postponement earlier this year.  The fight is now hopefully set to take place in 2019 but has yet to be rescheduled. Here we cover the credentials of two of the biggest names in the sport.

Christina Hammer

Hammer has long been one of the leading fighters in the sport. The 28 year old German has a professional boxing record of 23-0-0, with ten via knockout. In 2010 at the age of 20, Hammer picked up her first title and became the youngest ever fighter to win the WBO world championship. The following year the German then picked up the WBF title against Diana Kiss.

Hammer has also picked up several awards throughout her time in the professional ranks. In 2011 she was awarded fighter of the year by the WBF and then picked up the same award in 2013. In the same year she was also awarded the WBO fighter of the year. Three years later Hammer was then awarded the BDB Female boxer of the year and still remains the only European women to be awarded the Diamond Ring of the WBO.

Claressa Shields

The 23 year old American had a big reputation prior to moving into the professional ranks following her very successful amateur career.   She is a two time Gold medal winner at the Olympic games in the middleweight division following successes in 2012 and 2016. She also picked up Gold in the same division at the world championships in both 2014 and 2016. Shields also won the Gold medal at the 2015 Pan American games in the light heavyweight division. She was defeated just once in her 78 fight amateur career.

Since moving in to the professional ranks she has a record of 8-0-0, with two victories coming via knockout. She is just coming off the back of another victory most recently. Shields is the current unified world champion in two different weight classes, which is why she is regarded as one of the top fighters on the planet. This is due to the fact she has held the IBF super middleweight title since 2017, and the WBA and IBF middleweight titles since June 2018.
