Fuchs Starts 2018 World Championships With Dominating Performance

(NOV 17) Flyweight Virginia Fuchs (Houston, Texas) started her 2018 Women’s Elite World Championships tournament with a dominating performance on the first day of competition from New Delhi, India.

Fuchs stepped into the ring against a familiar foe, Tetyana Kob of Ukraine, who she faced on the international stage before. However, Fuchs was too strong from the Ukrainian, taking all five judges cards, 30-27, to advance to the next round.

“I kind of stuck to my plan,” stated Fuchs after her win. “She tried to box me more, she is an aggressive fighter, so it did make it a little more difficult for me, but I was able to adjust pretty quick.” The team captain of Team USA will have a day of rest before back into the ring on Saturday, where she will face Anamarija Cork of Croatia.

Four members of Team USA will step into the ring on the second day of competition. Light flyweight Jazzelle Bobadilla (Ewa Beach, Hawaii) will face Aigerim Kassenayeva of Kazakhstan; bantamweight and two-time World Championships bronze medalist Christina Cruz (New York, N.Y.) steps into the ring with India’s Manisha Moun; lightweight Stacia Suttles (Bronx, N.Y.) makes her World Championships debut against Sudaporn Seesondee of Thailand; while welterweight Oshae Jones (Toledo, Ohio) will box 2016 Olympian Iaroslava Iakushina of Russia.

This year’s Women’s Elite World Championships has brought 277 boxers from 62 different countries to India to fight for their spot on top of the podium. The American delegation is being guided by USA Boxing Head Coach Billy Walsh (Colorado Springs, Colo.), as well as National Assistant Coach Kay Koroma(Colorado Springs, Colo.) and assistant coaches Marc Gargaro (Newton, Mass.) and Jeff Mays (San Antonio, Texas).
