(FEB 20)
In an unexpected twist of events, "Merciless" Mary McGee is
stepping it up!
"Merciless" McGee, who is signed with Classic Women Warriors
Boxing Management, is coming off a 4th round TKO win over
veteran Victoria Cisneros on the Holm vs Prazak under card
(12/07/2012).
She is ranked #6 on WBAN as a Jr. Welterweight (140
lbs) and #2 in the IBF also at 140 lbs. However, McGee is ranked
#2 with the WBC for the WBC World Lightweight Title, 4th in the
WBA, (the WBO has no ranking system available), and next in line
for a shot at the WBC Lightweight Title against current WBC
Lightweight Champion Erica "La Pantera" Farias.
McGee is the mandatory opponent scheduled on the WBC's
lightweight division agenda per the WBC's notification to both
camps' respective representatives. Argentinean Promoter Osvaldo
Rivero and McGee's managers have been in communication and have
informally discussed the possibility of a late June or mid July
date, in Buenos Aires, Argentina. This is due to a voluntary
title defense which Mr. Rivero said Farias will participate in
on March 9, 2013.
McGee's managers Lori Steinhorst and Eddie Montalvo (Classic
Women Warriors Boxing Management), had no objections to Farias
doing a 'voluntary' title defense prior to meeting McGee.
Montalvo and Steinhorst relate; "...However, taking into
consideration that Farias will be fighting on March 9, 2013,
against another opponent, do we wait for the McGee vs Farias
title bout sometime in late June or July, or compete within that
time frame?"
"Eddie Montalvo stated “Mr. Osvaldo Rivero is one of the primary
promoters who has kept the sport of Women’s Boxing alive by
hosting the Argentinean women boxers on his shows, many times as
headliners and, bringing in talent from abroad to participate.
It is a pleasure and an honor that Mr. Rivero has invited us to
compete in Argentina. We endeavor to maintain a transparent
business relationship with Mr. Rivero and any other promoter who
would give us this kind of opportunity."
While it is sad, the truth is that in the U.S., there are not
enough promoters that take women's boxing seriously. Few of them
provide opportunities to compete on their cards. Our women
fighters and the sport suffer because of the lack of that
support. And while there are exceptions, there are not enough.
In the mean time, and due to Farias' March 9, 2013 'voluntary'
defense bout, The McGee camp, after discussing the options and
the fact that Mary is multi-faceted boxer, decided that now is
the time for Mary to step up her game. We are working on a plan
for Mary to showcase her skill and talents in what will be the
beginning of a bright future in this game. We will announce that
plan very soon.
"Merciless" Mary McGee will take an opportunity to compete at
the highest level of the sport and we are in an era where the
sport of Women Boxing craves a fighter like Mary to show up and
invigorate the sport. Mary can fight and brings an intense
energy to her bouts, we are confident that the fans will connect
with her.
While the Farias vs McGee fight is on hold, Mary's momentum is
not. Mary and her trainer Carlos Jones will continue to work
hard in Gary, Indiana, preparing for the fight of her career.
