(FEB 7) Deborah "Sunshine" Fettkether,
from Arizona, fought professionally from 2001 to 2004. She is
one of the female boxers that came into the sport---doing it "her" way---she
feared no one, and many of her fights took place out of her own
hometown advantage. In other words----Sunshine was a
"warrior" in the sport.
When Sunshine was actively boxing in the sport, she took on some of the best
boxers in the world, that included Lucia Rijker, Mitzi Jeter, Ann Wolfe,
Summer DeLeon, Eliza Olson, Lisa Holewyne and more!
This last week we spoke with
Sunshine and asked her what she has been up to since retiring
from boxing.....Sunshine told us the following:
"I opened my first gym in 2008 in Tempe, Arizona. I taught
boxing, Muay Thai and fitness classes, as well as trained
fighters that competed in Muay Thai and boxing."
"Since that time I've moved to a larger location in Tempe and
continue to teach classes and train fighters as well as do
personal and private training. I also teach women's self-defense
classes for the City of Tempe."
"My business partner is Bob
Karmel, who was my coach throughout my amateur and professional
career as a fighter. We have a very active team of amateur and
professional fighters as well as a growing student base."
"I consider myself very lucky as I have been able to stay very
busy and my business has thrived and grown with a bad economy. I
can't imagine doing anything else and am very happy to have a
career doing what I love."
"On a personal note....My son, Max is almost 7 years old and
doing very well in the 1st grade. He has played little league
baseball and tried a couple other sports, but wants nothing to
do with fighting arts, even though he is with me at the gym
quite often. He wants to be a police officer...or a coffee shop
worker when he grows up, lol! I have a great boyfriend who also
trains. We have been together almost two years."
WBAN would like to thank Sunshine for taking the time to let
boxing fans know what she has been doing...NOW I wonder if there
is any chance we can get her BACK in the ring...she is
DEFINITELY missed in the sport!
