Note from WBAN: Sahin is
ranked #8 with Boxrec. Carlescu is not ranked and last

years. She lost two out of her last three fights.
This bout was for a interim WIBF junior fly title belt.
We do not have the WIBF current ratings. When we
do not have the federations ratings we will refer the
Boxrec ratings. WBAN is going to show the ratings
of fights that are for world title belts when the
information is available. |
(JULY 23) 3200 spectators watched
a sometimes high-class boxing show organised by Arena
Box-Promotion in Göppingen/Germany on July 15. The last match of
the evening had Oezlem Sahin against Corina Carlescu. The two
female boxers fought for the interim WIBF world championship in
junior flyweight. Even though it was Carlescu’s first match as a
professional boxer since the middle of 2009, when she had turned
to Thai and kick boxing instead, it was a good fight with both
boxers putting in a sound technical performance. Sahin took the
initiative early on and chased her opponent around the ring not
letting her use her reach advantage.
Carlescu’ was most dangerous when
she threw her short hooks to the head but Sahin’s guard was good
and she concentrated on finding the gap and bringing in her
punches. After round 7 and 8, in which Sahin had reduced the
pressure a bit, she increased the speed once again - clearly
going for the knock out in the two final rounds.
However, she could not win the fight early but had to go the
full 10 rounds. In the end Sahin won unanimously on points. The
scoring was 93-99, 94-96 and 93-97.
It remains to be seen whether the
Romanian Corina Carlescu (now 6-4-1, 3 KO) will concentrate on
boxing from now on or rather return to Thai and kickboxing. But
for sure Oezlem Sahin (now 13-0-1, 4 KO) will be more and more
present on the female boxing scene. At the moment female boxing
is not shown on German TV and also the European channel
Eurosport, on which parts of this event were
shown, has decided not to show female boxing. On the other hand,
Show TV, a Turkish channel which can be watched via satellite,
showed Sahin’s fight live as the main match of the evening.
