Behind the Scenes in New Mexico
by Sue TL Fox

October 20, 2010

(OCT 20) I arrived  the afternoon of October 14th from Portland, OR to Albuquerque, New Mexico, to attend the All-Women's boxing card, that would have our WBAN World Title belt on the line.   When I arrived in Albuquerque, I met up with Stephanie Jaramillo, former pro boxer and promoter, who picked me up from the airport.

Stephanie first took me to the Santa Ana Star Casino, to show me where the event would be held on October 16th, and to show me the prop boxing ring that she uses to promote the event that is located at the entrance of the Casino.

This was a "prop" Ring that was set up at the entrance of the Santa Ana Star Casino with Jaramillo's boxing gear. The WBAN Belt was placed on the ring for photos.

After checking out the arena, and getting something to eat, I took a shuttle to my hotel.  I then settled into my room, and shortly there after met up with Lori Steinhorst of Bad Girls Boxing. She talked to me about her boxing camp that she had just recently conducted in California.  We tentatively talked about putting on a boxing camp in Portland, Oregon in May of 2011.

The following day the weigh-in was to be held at the Casino.   Before the weigh-in began, I met up with Alex "The Bronx Bomber" Ramos, of the Retired Boxers Foundation for the first time.  I had known him for years, but had never actually met him in person. Also present at the weigh-in was  Lou of Repo Operation [Tru TV show].

In the main event, Lindsay Garbatt and Melissa Hernandez fought to a 10-round majority draw. The two were fighting in a rematch, and for three vacant world title belts, that included the GBU, WIBA, and WBAN super featherweight belts. Judges scores were 95-95, 95-95, and 98-92 for Hernandez.  Hopefully these two talented fighters can take it to a televised card for the Trilogy. Both teams were bewildered by the scoring, and both teams were  very disappointed.

In the co-main, and the official retirement bout for Mia St. John, she won by a six-round unanimous decision over Tammy Franks, final judges scores were 60-54, on all cards.  In her parting words after her fight, she said that Franks was a very tough opponent, and that at the age of 43 years old, she felt good about being able to fight.

On the undercard, Belinda Laracuente won a six-round unanimous decision over DJ Morrison.  I really thought that Morrison would not be able to sustain a six-rounder with a much more experienced boxer as Laracuente---but DJ really tried her best and hung in with Laracuente, and getting stronger throughout the rounds.

Other bouts: Junior welterweight Brenda Gonzales won by a TKO in the first round (1:23) over Stephanie Maestas, and bantamweight Natalie Roy, pro debut won by a first round TKO over Alyx Luck.
