Japan: Izaki Pulled from fight?
February 14, 2009

(FEB 14) According to the Star Online, Kazumi Izaki, the oldest boxer in Japan, 45 years old, was set to fight Mexico’s Ana Maria Torres for the WBC Super Flyweight World title on February 28, 2009, but now she has been pulled off the card.

The article on the Star Online stated the following, “A Japanese mother of two’s bid to emulate George Foreman by winning a world boxing title at 45 has been floored after the World Boxing Council (WBC) ruled she was too old. Kazumi Izaki, who became Japan’s oldest professional boxer last year, was poised to fight Mexico’s Ana Maria Torres for the world superflyweight crown on Feb 28. But WBC officials suddenly pulled the plug on the Mexico bout on health grounds, fearing the former aerobics instructor could get hurt by the hard-punching Torres.” Full Story on the Star Online

A boxing fan wrote into WBAN about this recent news said, “Is Kazumi Izaki too old to fight? I can not agree. Kazumi is younger than Evander Holyfield. If WBC banned Kazumi this time----it becomes a bad precedent. Boxers in her 40's can't fight anymore in the future.”
