(JULY 31) Regina Halmich made her
penultimate appearance in the ring last Saturday, in Düsseldorf. She
announced long ago, that she wants to retire before her 31st
birthday. However, her injury earlier this year forced her to
postpone her title defense against Wendy Rodriguez from early June
to late July. Therefore her last fight has had to be put back to
30th November - eight days after her 31st birthday. Halmich is
determined to leave boxing as a champion, so the only thing that can
make her reconsider her retirement, is a loss in her last fight.
Wendy Rodriguez did her best to steal the WIBF Flyweight Belt from
her, and made Halmich work for her money. The German boxing
queen usually faces taller opponents, but she had to come to terms
with a smaller one this time.
Rodriguez' size, speed, and bobbing and
weaving style obviously caused her some problems, and made her miss
more punches than usual for her. Halmich's trade mark is relentless
attack and work, work, work, and this secured her narrow win against
a clever boxing Rodriguez. The judges scored the bout 98-93, 98-93
and 96-95. The latter being closest to a correct score in my
opinion.
Wendy Rodriguez said in a post fight
interview, that she felt she won the fights. She argued, that
Halmich missed as lot of her shots, and although the German did get
through with some, they were outweighed by the jabs she managed to
place on Halmich throughout the 10 rounds.
The two other title fights on the card
saw Ina Menzer defending her WIBF featherweight title in an
action-packed fight against a hard hitting and game Jazmin Rivas of
Mexico. The bout was scored 99-92, 99-91 & 100-90 in favor of Menzer.
Also, Julia Sahin also retained
her WIBF Junior Flyweight title, defeating Delia Lopez of Mexico by
97-93, 98-92 & 95-95.
