(JULY 6) WBAN learned earlier today that
Melinda Cooper has dropped off the boxing card where she would have
fought Monica Lovato on July 28, 2007, in Acoma, New Mexico,
for the IBA Junior Bantamweight world title.
We followed up on that information and contacted the Cooper Camp to
find out what was going on.
We received an official response with
the following statement, “After more than ten years, over 25 amateur
bouts and 18 professional fights, the underground boxing company has
announced that it will no longer be representing female boxer,
Melinda Cooper. Longtime trainer and manager, James Pena stated,
"We've put a great deal of time and effort into Melinda and the
progression of her boxing career and personal development, but we've
recently realized that we no longer share the same career goals. We
wish her the best and continued success in boxing and in life."
Under the management of the underground boxing company, Melinda
Cooper built an impressive record of 18-0-0 (10 KOs), she won the
IBA Flyweight Title and became one of the leading female competitors
in the sport.”
