(JULY 17) WBAN posted a story on there are no shortcuts in boxing this week,
and referred to a comment made by a boxer who was 1-0-0, and in the same
breath she said that a future possible world title fight could be in the
making for her, and that she was “rated” on BoxRec.
This is not uncommon as WBAN will have this come up time and again, when
boxers are not rated anywhere in any federation, or on WBAN, and they refer
to BoxRec for their World rating status.
Martin Reichter of BoxRec contacted WBAN and explained more about their
procedures in calculating their ratings. Martin said, “Sue,
referring to your articles World Rankings - BoxRec with "0" wins -
and There are no shortcuts in boxing I'd like to express the following
concerns. I am the person responsible for the current rules and calculation
program of BoxRec Ratings. BoxRec Ratings show the rating of all boxers in
BoxRec database, including those boxers, who only show losses. Every boxer
shall see his rating and rank. This is a different intention to
WBAN's (Dee Williams)
ratings,
which only show some selected top rated boxers in every division.
Unfortunately, we all know, in some weight divisions there are very few
active boxers in women boxing. So it is simply inevitable, that boxers with
no win may rank in the top 10 to 20 of a weight division, which doesn't
comprend more boxers. All these basics are well discussed and understood by
Dee Williams and me in a lot of posts in a very respectful manner, from my
perspective. So I was somewhat irritated by this disgusted finger-pointing
and misleading manner in your article. I hope, this message will have helped
to clarify some underlying facts and basics of BoxRec's ratings and
intentions. Best regards Martin”
I would like to respond to Martin on this issue. In my article, where I
stated that there are no shortcuts in boxing--I referred to a female boxer,
who, like many of the women boxers and the boxing community will use these
particular rankings when they are talking with WBAN. They will use the
BoxRec rankings, especially if they are trying to show WBAN that they are a
rated boxer---when in fact they are NOT rated ANYWHERE in the world. I
merely expressed an opinion about the troubling issue of anyone, including
BoxRec, rating women boxers who have Zero Wins. I also did a story a while
back on boxers listed in the federations who had never had a win. That
article was called “Crazy, CRAZY
ratings”.
I also
feel that there is nothing wrong with agreeing to disagree on this
particular issue or any issue. I want to thank Martin for contacting WBAN to
give more insight into how they calculate their ratings.
