The Confusion and Controversy with  Tsagouris bout
By Rick McLean
& Anna Kosinska
July 15, 2005

(JULY 15) Last night in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada,  Sandy Tsagouris (3-0, 2KO’s), was supposed to fight Sharon Gaines (8-4, 2KO’s) of Kansas City, Missouri, but there was much confusion and Controversy concerning this fight---and this fight did not take place.

The match did not take place because according to Stele promotions president Jim Gentle, Sharon had problems crossing the border but would not go into the specifics of what actually happened. However, Jim did state that Sharon was not under any contract and she was not at any fault.

After contacting Gaines by email about this fight on July 14th, she responded by saying, "Thanks for taking the time to email me, but I am going to have to disappoint you. I am NOT fighting in Canada this Thursday (which is today) I just fought last Friday night here in Kansas City,  and never agreed to that fight in Canada as I already had another fight lined up in New Jersey on August 19th and need to train! They incorrectly posted it on the internet Boxrec site and were supposed to remove it. That being said, I hope to fight up there in the future and I definitely look forward to fighting Sandy Tsagouris! I think we are for sure going to meet in the ring one day!”

With that said the promoters had to scramble to find a replacement for Sandy but none could be reached that both sides would agree on.

Jim Gentle stated that, “Sandy is a competent fighter who is building proficiency as a boxer and is an asset to their shows.” Jim went on to state that, “Stele promotions takes great pride and strives to put at least one women’s boxing match on each card.”

Stele promotions did try to do everything they could in order to have a women’s match on the card.

Stele promotions asked Lisa “Bad News” Brown if she wanted to box Sandy in an exhibition match. Lisa was more than happy to and rushed to the weigh ins that morning and was looking forward to the opportunity.

However, Sandy’s management did not want her to box in an exhibition. According to Sandy Tsagouris’ manager Billy Martin, “Sandy does not do exhibitions. She wanted to fight Lisa Brown but I would not permit that for two simple reasons, we didn’t train for a southpaw and I don’t just throw her in the ring with anybody, she is going to go far in this sport!”

The downside to this is that many of Sandy’s fans were disappointed.
