Special Report on Women Boxing Amateurs in 2005:  Amateurs Provide a Great Showing at Huf Boxing Event
By: Rick McLean Toronto Canada

On Sunday, June 5th, 2005 in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada, Huf Executive Fitness held an exciting amateur boxing show that featured 11 matches.

These matches ranged from Cadet A’s through to the Senior division. The gym was full and the crowd anticipated an awesome show and they were not disappointed. Each match was evenly contested and very exciting.

The show was well organized for both the boxers and the fans. There was loud music, great refreshments and a superb boxing atmosphere. Each boxer received a well earned award for their matches regardless if they won or lost. There was good sportsmanship shown by the boxers, coaches, and fans. In my estimation the show was a success.

The third match of the afternoon featured two women in the Senior 135 pound division. Stephanie Swayne from the Cabbagetown boxing club in Toronto boxed Liz Zacharski who fights out of the Jamestown boxing club in Brampton. Both women displayed excellent boxing abilities over the three rounds however Swayne controlled the action by using her jab and effective head movements. Zacharski was able to land many counter punches but could not press the action. In the end Swayne got the decision victory.

Brock Arthur from the Tiller boxing club in Ajax stopped Ernesto Portillo from Waterloo in a three round Senior heavyweight match up. Arthur controlled much of the action and landed solid punches to the head and body of Portillo. Ernesto gave a gallant effort standing toe to toe with Arthur but the referee stopped the match.

Match number seven was a slugfest between two twelve year olds in the Cadet A division. This was the best match of the afternoon in my opinion. Shaun Boodsingh from the Champion boxing took on Garret Laird from the Big Tyme boxing club in Orangeville.

As mentioned this was a slugfest and both boxers never stopped swinging the entire match. There had to have been over two hundred punches thrown by both boxers over the course of the match. The crowd was on its feet the entire time and never stopped screaming and cheering. Both boxers received standing eight counts at different times in the match. It was such a close match but in the end Laird got the decision victory. With the win, Laird earned the “fighter of the show” award. It was a great show by both boxers and they deserve a lot of credit.

The main event of the evening featured Dan Ludwig from Hamilton against Huf’s own Jonathan Rego. This was a three round Senior bout in the 175lbs weight division. Both boxers started off cautiously but the action soon picked up. Rego pressed the advantage and pushed Ludwig to the ropes with effective power shots. Ludwig was backing up most of the match and received one standing eight count; however he landed successful counter punches and used great defensive abilities. It was by no means a one-sided match. Dan Ludwig landed just as many power punches but could not press the advantage as well as Rego could. In the end Rego won a hard fought decision. It was an excellent main event and both boxers received the applauds they both richly deserved.

Other results were:
Jason Roberts (Cabbagetown) defeated Mike McWilliams (Big Tyme)
David Bracken defeated David Gibson (Huf)
Robbie Shewel (Uptown) defeated Zishan Khan (Champion)
Colton Lormand (Big Tyme) beat James Kilby (Steeltown)
Steve Wilcox (Steeltown) beat Adrian Sinanan (Bramalae)
Dave Rutherford (Backstreet) beat Scott Chambers (City)
Logan Cotton (Big Tyme) defeated Scott Paul (Niagara)
