Round: Reid - Halmich

(SEPT 12) Special Report by Peter Geudens of Belgium who gives a round by
round account!
Elena Reid makes a great impression right
from the start. The southpaw not only looks stunning in her pink baby doll
outfit, she also fights very aggressively, moving forward from the
beginning. Halmich counters effectively. A pretty even round.
Reid again takes the initiative. Both
fighters throw in several good combinations. In the final seconds, Halmich
comes through with a right cross and a left jab. A slight advantage for
Halmich in this round.
Elena starts rather slow this time, but
gradually puts up the pressure. Halfway through the round she hits Regina a
few times with a powerful left and towards the end she unleashes a flurry of
punches. Halmich seems to be in trouble for a moment. This round is
definitely Elena’s round.
A strong start from both fighters. Reid takes
the upper hand again and is especially successful with powerful left crosses
and jabs.
While she keeps using her left hand, Elena
also steadily works her opponent’s body now. She dominates most of the round
but Regina has her moments as well. She throws an awesome right jab in the
last few seconds.
After 30 seconds, Reid puts Halmich against
the ropes and puts her under a lot of pressure. At 1’10” Halmich counters
effectively with a few excellent left hooks and jabs to the face. Elena wins
this round, though.
Again, it’s Elena who opens. She keeps moving
forward and still looks perfectly fit. Both fighters throw in good combos,
but Reid is more active and more accurate.
An excellent round. There are quite a few
fierce exchanges, Elena seems to be a bit quicker, but it’s a close round.
Halmich starts aggressively after the opening
bell. Then she slows somewhat down, but takes the lead in the first part of
the round. In the second half, Elena makes an impressive comeback,
connecting several times with a powerful left to the face.
A very strong start by Reid. Both fighters
give it all in this last round and turn it into a real slugfest. Again, Reid
proves to be quicker and hits her mark more often than her opponent.
Baby Doll radiates joy after the fight, cheered by an enthusiast crowd.
Halmich looks rather worried. She even raises her opponent’s hand (in
victory?) before the verdict is announced.
The judges scored the fight as follows:
Roger Tillemann (Belgium): 93 – 97 for Reid
Leszek Jankowiak (Poland): 97 – 97
Oliver Evers (Germany): 98 - 94 for Halmich
In other words, the fight ends in a draw so that Halmich retains her title.
Poor Elena, who had fought so well, bursts into tears on hearing this
decision.
The Germans tv-presenter calls it “an incomprehensible decision” and “a
scandal”.
Regina doesn’t want to comment on the judges’ decision but admits that she
was worried that she ‘d lose her title and indicates that she would have
accepted it if the judges had given the fight to Elena.
Jean Marcel Nartz from Universum Box Promotion admits that Regina “was a bit
lucky” and that Elena would’ve won the fight if it had taken place in the
U.S.
Elena herself is a real good sport about the whole thing. When she’s
interviewed, she has already regained her charming smile. She doesn’t
comment on the decision either and says she’s looking forward to the rematch
and that next time she will “win even more”. Upon this she blows kisses and
thanks the crowd who cheer her once more.
It was definitely a good fight with two crowd-pleasing athletes who lived up
to expectations. Especially Elena made a great impression. As for the
decision… the good news is that everybody agreed on having a rematch!
