(JULY 14) Last night at the
Wells Fargo Center, in Philadelphia, Australia's Skye Nicolson,
125 1/2,
successfully defended her WBC Featherweight title when she
easily defeated Dyana Vargas, 125 1/2, from the Dominican
Republic. Final judges’ scores were 100-90
on all cards. Nicolson remains undefeated with a 11-0-0
(1KO) record, and Vargas is now 19-2-0 (12KO).
Nicolson last fought on April 6, 2024, against Sarah Mahfoud,
where she won the vacant WBC Featherweight world title by a
ten-round unanimous decision, where as Vargas' last fight took
place on June 8, 2024, when she won an eight-round unanimous
decision over Marcela Nieto.
In this fight last night
Nicolson easily defeated Vargas in a one-sided ten-round match,
with no threat to Nicolson's victory in any of the rounds.
Check out the highlights of the bout that was streamed on DAZN.
One media source was quoted the following, “Nicolson was
barely touched through 10 rounds, pitching a shutout on all
three judges' cards (100-90 x3) to turn back the challenge of
Vargas, seemingly without breaking a sweat.”
Nicholson said in a post-fight interview, “I knew she was going
to be dangerous, especially early on, she wasn’t as aggressive
as we’d prepared for and expected. I definitely wanted to keep
my shape, pick my shots and go through the gears as we went
through the fight and I feel like I stuck to that plan.”
“To her credit, Vargas kept coming despite being significantly
outskilled,” another media source commented.
Nicolson has long been calling for a fight with Amanda “The Real
Deal” Serrano. If she is calling out Serrano, she better up her
game in the ring. Serrano is one of the best in her division and
will take the fight to Nicolson without missing a beat. Be
careful what you wish for, is all WBAN can say on that fight.
Nicholson has shown her dominance in the ring against Vargas,
but a match against Serrano would be an entirely different
challenge. Serrano's speed, power, and technical skills are
unmatched, making her a formidable opponent for anyone in the
division. If Nicolson truly wants to prove herself as one of the
best, she will have to elevate her game significantly before
stepping into the ring with Serrano. It would be a clash of two
skilled athletes, and fans would undoubtedly be treated to an
exciting display of boxing prowess.
