The 2nd International German Women's Amateur Boxing Championships
Photos and Story By Torben Lodberg
(SEPT 7) The 2nd
International German Women’s Amateur Boxing Championships were held at the
Bavarian town of Maisach last weekend, in the categories women (born 1985 or
earlier) and Juniors (born 1986 and 1987).
The championships
took place in a three day period, beginning on Friday, September 3. The
Prelims were held at the gymnasium of one of the local schools, while the
venue for Saturday’s semi finals and Sunday’s finals was a Beer Tent,
Bavarian style, constructed for the town’s annual summer fete. Saturday the
fights took place morning and afternoon, and the finals were held Sunday
morning. This ensured, that the championships were a real family event and
not marred by spectators over indulging in the good local brew.
The women’s category had
46 boxers in 8 weight divisions resulting in 39 entertaining fights. Four of
last years champions were able to renew their status as International German
Champion, i.e. Rebekka Hermann – 50 kg (48 kg in 2003), Dagmar Koch - 51 kg,
Sonja Dürr – 57 kg and Rola El Halabi – 63 kg. The latter won the 66 kg
division in 2003. Two of last years champions, Ina Menzer (60 kg) and Alesia
Graff (54 kg) have turned pro, and their successors are Cindy Metz and
Carmen Falke.
16 fighters in 5
weight categories signed up for the Junior championships, resulting in 13
bouts.
It turned out to
be 3 very enjoyable days for an avid women’s boxing fan. It was obvious,
that the regional boxing boards had ensured, that the boxers representing
their areas were well skilled and in good shape.
All in all it was
a pleasure to to be there, and congratulations to the German Amateur
Association and the BC Piccolo, Fürstenfeldbruck for a well organised
championship. However, first and foremost a big thank you to all the boxers,
who gave us three days of exciting fights. For ALL fight results,
