Tsagouris Wins by Second Round KO
By Rick McLean
March 13, 2005

(MAR 13) On March 10, 2005, Stele Promotions held an event entitled “Broken Hearts and Broken Noses” at the Mississauga Grand in Mississauga Ontario, Canada. There were five bouts on the card however only two of them were competitive and one had an interesting ring entrance.

The event was sponsored by Huf Fitness, Sandals travel, and Steelback beer and each sponsor gave out prizes for the fans.

In addition, there was pre and post match predictions and assessments done by Canadian boxing experts Chuck “Spider” Jones and Mike “Hoagie” Hogan.

The third bout of the evening featured a scheduled four round women’s Featherweight match between Toronto’s Sandy Tsagouris and the Dominican Republic’s Austria Urbaez. Tsagouris had just come off of a  first round TKO win over Monique Velasquez last September while Urbaez is coming off a 10 round unanimous decision loss against Silke Weickenmeier which also took place last September.

Tsagouris weighed in at 124 lbs while Urbaez weighed 126 lbs. Ms. Tsagouris came out to a thundering ovation from the hometown crowd and used that energy through the entire match. Tsagouris came out swinging in the first round which I do not think Urbaez was expecting. Maybe Urbaez’s knock out prediction “ticked off” Sandy. Either way, Tsagouris landed solid straight left, right combinations that kept Urbaez on the defensive.

Sandy was able to “duck under” or “side step” any counter punches that Urbaez offered. Urbaez’s only success came when she grabbed on to Sandy and held because it seemed to frustrate Tsagouris.

Within the first ten seconds of round two Sandy came out and connected with a straight left followed by a crisp right hook that snapped Urbaez’s head to the side and crumbled her to the canvass. Urbaez regained her footing at the count of eight but at that point Sandy smelt blood and never let her off the hook. Tsagouris chased Urbaez around the ring until finally cornering her and set her up with a solid left hook to the ribs followed by another right to the head that sent Urbaez through the ropes and almost in to the front row.

I had to take evasive action, however Urbaez still bumped into me. Urbaez did not have the opportunity to get up again because her corner threw in the towel. The match was ruled a KO at the 56 second mark of round number 2 and this victory moved Sandy Tsagouris to 3-0 (2 KO’s) and with this lose Urbaez drops to (6-4-1).

It should be noted that Tsagouris has challenged fellow Torontonian Lisa “Bad News” Brown and wants a shot at her IWBF world title.
