Denise Moraetes
(Friendly), now retired, fought as a Junior welterweight from Augusta,
Georgia, and began boxing in 1995. She had a very successful
amateur boxing career, and was a two-time amateur national champion.
Some of her amateur boxing highlights were:
Denise defeated Kathy Collins to win in her
division in the 1995 New York Golden Gloves. That year was the
first ever for women in which they were allowed to participate in the
event.
On April 12, 1996, at the Madison Square Garden, she
fought Melissa Salamone for the lightweight championship. She
lost the match with Salamone, but reports were that it was a fight that
brought the crowd to their feet.
In 1997, Denise walked away with the New
York Golden Gloves pendant in the junior Welterweight division, when she
defeated Melissa Johnson.
Denise continued to box in the amateurs, and
in July 1997 in Augusta, Georgia, Denise won the 139-pound title at
the inaugural USA Boxing Women's National Championships with a 5-0
decision over Sherry Huchber of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. On May 31,
1998, she then went on to defend her U.S. 139-pound National Title in the
USA Boxing and won.
Before turning pro, Denise managed to accumulate
an amateur record of 14-1. This experience was to imprint Denise's
commitment to work with other amateur women boxers. |
