WBAN GOES ONE ON ONE WITH TOUGHILL!
by Sue TL Fox
July 29, 2002

Erin talks with WBAN about her last fight with Frazier-Lyde and about the sport in general...

TL Fox: You have now had five professional bouts in the sport, and have already fought for a title. How are you feeling about the sport at this time?

Erin: I have a very positive outlook towards boxing for the most part. There are a lot of aspects in the sport that are beyond my control - so I have to just concentrate on myself and how to become a better boxer. Turn the negative into positive.

TL Fox: Since your last fight, do you have any upcoming bouts or are you still healing from your accidental headbutt that you received in your fight with Frazier-Lyde?

Erin: I am scheduled to fight sometime in August. The date is not set yet. For the most part my head is fine. It's as good as it's gonna get I guess.

TL Fox: You fought Jacqui Frazier-Lyde on June 4, 2002, when the fight was ruled a "no contest" ....WAS this fight for the WIBF super-middleweight WORLD title, or the WIBF super-middleweight INTERCONTINENTAL belt?

Erin: Now, I could be wrong (because I did not have the best person dealing with this contract, but I believe it was SUPPOSED to be the WORLD belt. I just wanted the fight - I wasn't really thinking about the belt at the time...It was originally scheduled for 10 rounds. Then, the commission reduced it to 8 rounds because of my record. And the level of the belt was also reduced. I think the title would have been a INTERCONTINENTAL one INSTEAD of a WORLD one. But like I said, it might not be absolutely accurate. That's another good reason to have a great manager - so that you KNOW WHO you are
fighting and WHAT you are fighting for! (Laugh)

TL Fox: Since that fight, have you had any discussions to rematch with Frazier-Lyde?

Erin: NO!!! I mean really, it should have been ME rematching her on that card. We should have set it up RIGHT AFTER our fight. Instead, she ran off saying something about going to court the next day. (laugh) She had to go to court after she fought Heidi too. She's a busy lady...

TL Fox: Can you give boxing fans some background as to why you would have been chosen to fight Frazier-Lyde for a title fight when you did not have very many fights, especially in comparision with boxers like Ann Wolfe, etc.?

Erin: Because someone like Ann Wolfe would have knocked her ass out in less than a minute. They picked me for the same reason a girl like Hartmann was picked - an easy win. Someone without a lot of experience. It's understandable - her husband ( much like Ali's ) wants to give her a string of "easy" fights to build a good record. She can appear more like a real champion. Ok, that is good and fine, but once you reach like a 7-0 record, you need to start fighting REAL competition. You can't keep picking people who have no experience to beat - I mean you can, but that's not what being a real fighter is all about. You have to put your butt on the line and fight better competition as you get better. If I were Frazier, I sure as hell wouldn't feel like the "champ" that she THINKS she is. Ha Ha Ha!! Yeah, I'm 9-1 with a couple belts against a bunch of opponents who were either mismatches or at the time had no skills. And the one person who gave me a run for my money I'm hiding from. ( That would be me of course) Sure, she fought Taylor, but she wasn't even 100%. And they should rematch also.

TL Fox: Did you see the Frazier-Lyde vs. Hartmann fight, and if so what was your opinion and thoughts about this match?

Erin: It was pretty sad. I mean, I don't take anything away from anyone who steps in the ring, but c'mon! From what I know, Heidi IS a welterweight. Frazier is light - heavy. That sounds real fair. Frazier fights just as wild as ever. No game plan - just a bum rush with no boxing skills. I guess Hartmann thought she hit hard cause Jackie stunned her. But stopping it? That was a joke. The girl was in trouble, but the ref practically pushed her to the ground and then IMMEDIATELY stopped it. I was so mad I was laughing. And then she goes on about how she is the "real" champ and she wants Suzy Taylor and blah blah blah. What? No rematch with Erin Toughill? I was like "Please Shut Up".

TL Fox: Before your fight was stopped with Frazier due to the accidental headbutt when you fought Frazier, do you know who was ahead on the score cards, and do you know what the scores were?

Erin: I do not know what the scores were. But I do know I was ahead. Two judges had it for me and the third judge had us tied. So that was pretty nice to find out.

TL Fox: Feel free to talk about anything that I did not ask you, do you have any additional comments?

Erin: Well, you know if Frazier's people read this - I WANT A REMATCH! I mean, I can't even get a copy of my fight from them! I will be more ready than ever to fight this lady. I only have a problem with her because of the way she hypes herself up like she's the greatest thing since women started to box. I don't find her humble at all - just a great talker. Cause she just talks and talks and talks....about herself. She is not in the same category as the Taylor's and the Wolfe's and the Rijker's out there - She just wishes she was. She must be a great lawyer....

ONE ON ONE INTERVIEW WITH ERIN TOUGHILL
By Craig Ogawa
May 28, 2002

Craig:  I read that you sparred with Suzy Taylor in preparation for her match with Laila Ali, which has been postponed. Have you known Ms. Taylor for a while or was this strictly a professional thing where they were calling around to find a sparring partner for her?

Erin:  I was actually her sparring partner for the Frazier fight first. That is how I met her. Jesse Reid has been her coach on and off for several years. He thought it'd be a great opportunity for me - which it was. I don't get to spar with girls like her!

Craig:  Having sparred with Taylor, are you free to comment on her current skills and reflexes and what shape she seems to be in?

Erin:  First of all, Suzy is one tough woman. She hits like a mule. When Suzy puts her mind to work - the girl is a force to be reckoned with.

Craig:  Does sparring with her give you confidence that you’ll do better than she did against Ms. Frazier-Lyde?

Erin: Better? That can be an ambiguous term. I'm just gonna fight MY fight and leave the rest up to God.

Craig:  I haven’t heard any details about [the draw against Dakota Stone], I just know that Ms. Stone is a tough opponent. If you’d like to comment about that fight ...

Erin:  I think it could have gone either way, honestly. I had not boxed in over a year - and to be honest - I was not expecting to have such a hard fight. The woman is like a tornado! I was in shock! (laugh)  I think that is the biggest thing - you HAVE to expect the worse. I'm sure we will rematch and I'll be much more prepared. So, in retrospect, I guess I did OK considering...

Craig:  Alright, let’s put this bluntly [...] - you’re one very tough woman, why does Jacqui Frazier and her team want to mess with you? What do you think? Is it because you haven’t had many fights?

Erin:  Well, I know Suzy helped get me the fight. They called her and asked about some of the girls who were in the top ten in that particular division. They came across my name and were a little shocked that she knew me. Suzy thought it'd be a great opportunity for me. So, I took the fight.

Craig:  Do you still have a ways to go technique-wise in straight, conventional boxing that she thinks she can outbox you?

Erin: Well, I'm SURE it is because I have not had A LOT of boxing fights. lol... I have had 11 or 12 pro fights all together - so it's not like I don't have experience.  Let's put it this way. If Suzy thought I was a bad fighter the first time around - she would not invite me back to be her sparring partner for her next fight. I was to help her with the Ali fight BEFORE I knew about the Frazier fight.

Craig:  Has she [Frazier-Lyde] improved that much?

Erin: . I dunno. But, I know she is tough. I'll be expecting that.
