'Quick Park' IABA 2016 Irish Elite Finals - Review -by Michael O'Neill -December 4, 2015
(DEC 4)  The 2016 IABA Women’s Elite championships drew to a close at the National Stadium in Dublin at the weekend with some excellent performances from a number of boxers, and not all of them winners.   The bout which attracted most attention in the National media was that in which young Clonmel BC boxer, Shauna O’Keeffe gloved off against Olympic and five times world champion Katie Taylor making a welcome return to the ring. Claressa Shields out of Rio Olympic Test event due wrist injury -by Michael O'Neill

...9 DEC 1)  The AIBA has just confirmed the names of those competing in the 2016 Rio Test event December 4/6 and among the original entries were U.S Olympic trials winners Mikaela Mayer (60kg) and Virginia Fuchs(51kg),as well as reigning Olympic Gold medallist Claressa Shields(75) kg. Sadly, WBAN has learned that due to injury the Olympic champion announced Monday that she has withdrawn though will still travel with the team to Rio. Russia's Tatiana Zrazhevskaya is new 'Golden Girl' in Sweden -by Michael O'Neill-November 23, 2015 - (NOV 23) The reigning champion Finland’s Mira Potkonen missed the opportunity of defending her Golden Girl championship title when this year’s event took place at the Boråshallen, Borås, Sweden this weekend.  Sadly Mira had to withdraw due to injuries sustained in recent tournaments and underwent treatment in her home country in an effort to be back at her best for next year’s European Olympic qualifiers in Turkey and the AIBA World Elite championships in Astana, Kazakhstan in May....Full Story

GB Championships set for EIS Sheffield on 26th November -by Michael O'Neill -November 5, 2015(NOV 5)  The British Amateur Boxing Association (BABA) has named 12 boxers to compete in the GB Boxing Championship 2015 at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield on Thursday 26 November 2015 (Doors open at 6.00pm, boxing begins at 6.30pm).  This tournament though should not be confused with the National Elite Championships which for 2016 are due to take place (quarter finals, semi-finals and finals) between April and May. AIBA sets new dates for 2016 AIBA Women's World Championships in Astana-by Michael O'Neill

(OCT 31)  The International Boxing Association (AIBA) has set new dates for the 2016 Women’s World Elite championships in Astana, Kazakhstan much to the displeasure of some of its own National Federations who say they were not consulted on the matter.  The championships were due from Jan 24-Feb 6 but will now take place between May 19-27.Bearing in mind that boxers of most nations have been preparing for the original January date this seriously disrupts their training schedule and as a result it is understood that several countries are now contemplating delaying their own Elite championships. (OCT 31) MEMPHIS, TENN. - The 2016 Olympic Team Trials for Women's Boxing championship round bout sheet is now set after the final three challengers bracket matches on Friday at the Memphis Cook Convention Center. Flyweight Marlen Esparza, lightweight Jajaira Gonzalez (Glendora, Calif.), and middleweight Tika Hemingway (Brackenridge, Pa.) each earned unanimous decision victories to advance to championship night on Saturday. Busy weekend for Ireland's Elite boxers at Celtic Box Cup in Dungarvan-by Michael O'Neill

(SEPT 22) A busy weekend ahead for many of Ireland’s Elite boxers as the 2015 edition of the CELTIC BOX CUP gets underway Friday at the Sports Centre in the West Waterford seaside town of Dungarvan.  Some 255 boxers from not only Ireland but also neighbours England, Scotland and Wales will join international stars from many countries including Poland, Portugal even Australia and United Arab Emirates (Dubai).  Current Irish Elite champions Dervla Duffy, Kelly Harrington and Clare Grace have entered this year as have many top male stars including National champions Dean Gardiner and Myles Casey....Full Story
   








 
Souhila Bouchene, Kehinde Obareh and Edith Agu Ogoke are inaugural champions at African Games in Brazzaville-by Michael O'Neill -September 16, 2015  (SEPT 16) The 11th African Games have ended in Brazzaville, Congo, with some outstanding successes for the boxers from Algeria and Nigeria.  The Algerians topped the table with five Golds from the thirteen on offer on finals day. Nigeria placed second with four golds, two of them in the women’s Olympic weights.  Some 22 women and 173 men from 30 countries took part in the Multi Sport Games at the Talangai Gymnasium in the capital. ....Full Story
   








 
Drabik, Potkonen and Fontijn take Feliks Stamm Memorial titles in Warsaw

(SEPT 14)  The host nation’s Sandra Drabik (51kg), Finland’s Mira Potkonen (60kg) and Nouchka Fontijn from the Netherlands (75kg) took the three women’s Olympic weight titles at the XXXII Feliks Stamm Memorial tournament in Warsaw, at the weekend.  Ireland’s ‘AIBA unranked’ Ceire Smith ended the hopes of pre-tournament favourite and World no.1 Marlen Esparza (2-1) in the 51kg preliminaries whilst USA Boxing surprised most onlookers as only one of their heavily....Full Story

Boxing: Esparza & Miller go out on 'day of shocks' at Feliks Stamm in Warsaw

(SEPT 11) Team USA Boxing suffered two 'shock' defeats on the opening day of the prestigious Feliks Stamm Memorial tournament in Warsaw late Wednesday.  AIBA World no.1 Marlen Esparza exited the tournament in the preliminary round at the hands of the unranked Irish woman, Ceire Smith from Cavan BC 1:2 on a split decision.  Worse was to follow as at 75kg Olympic weight, Raquel Miller lost 3:0 to Sweden's evergreen Anna Laurell Nash who took her first AIBA Gold back in 2001 at the inaugural World Championships in Scranton.....Full Story
   








 
Latest Update on Amateur Boxing Champion Anna Crutchfield! Source/PR  -September 8, 2015  (SEPT 8)  WBAN received a latest update on amateur boxing champion Anna Crutchfield.  Anna has recently completed a four week intensive training camp in Kissimmee, Florida,  at "Heart Of A Warrior" boxing gym, under the watchful eye of Coach Doel Montes. Anna has cut fifteen pounds of weight, while gaining a lot of strength and speed. Anna is now at the "Pathway To Glory" Olympic Qualifier in Baltimore, MD. Irish eyes are smiling as Amy Broadhurst takes another European title.  by Michael O'Neill-August 23, 2015  (AUG 23)  Dealgan’s Amy Broadhurst was crowned featherweight champion of Europe as the 2015 EUBC Women’s Youth and Junior championships came to a close at the SportHall in Keszthely, Hungary on Saturday.  Club team-mate Orla Garvey and Shauna O’Callaghan of Clann Naofa had to settle for silver against Russian opponents in the Junior feather and light classes.  Broadhurst beat Italy’s Francesca Matusciello on a majority decision to secure 57kg gold. Chinese boxers dominate proceedings on ASBC Asian finals day in Wulanchabu

(AUG 18)   Boxers from ‘powerhouse’ China totally dominated proceedings on finals day of the Asian Confederation championships in Wulanchabu but no titles this time round for India – a big blow with such an important year ahead including the AIBA World Championships in Astana, Kazakhstan (an Olympic qualifier also) and of course the XXXI Olympiad in Rio.
