Women’s Boxing Action this Weekend

(JULY 31)  WBAN’s wrap up for this coming weekend’s boxing action in women’s boxing worldwide. On Friday, August 1st, the action begins on boxing cards on the following: ARGENTINA: At the Club Unión Eléctrica, in Cordoba, Argentina, in an eight round bout, Carolina Marcela Gutierrez Gaite, 21-4-1 (13KO), of Cordoba will be fighting in a non-title bout against Anahi Yolanda Salles, 4-12-2 (1KO), of Buenos Aires. Gaite has fought two Interim WBO Bantamweight world title fights in 2014, losing both of those bouts by split decision. For Salles, this will be the third bout with Gaite, with the last fight with Gaite being a no contest, and in 2012 having a six-round split draw.  Full Story

(JULY 30)  In 2002, WBAN had the pleasure of interviewing Phyllis Kugler, pioneer boxer from the 1950s, who fought Joann Hagen, Barbara Buttrick, and was one of the boxers in the past who helped pave the way for female boxers of today.  We received an update on Kugler, and was notified that she passed away on March 6, 2014. (JULY 22) Baltimore, MD  – Blue chip prospect Tyrieshia “Lady Tiga” Douglas has her sights set on capturing a world title before the end of 2014.  At 5-0 with 1 win by knockout, the Baltimore-based Washington DC native’s set a lofty goal for herself. As an amateur, she won multiple Golden Gloves and National PAL titles while making Team USA twice. According to industry insiders, if Douglas wins a title in her sixth pro fight, she’d have the third fewest bouts before winning a major world title. (JULY 21)  (COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO.) – Team USA closed the 2014 Pan American Olympic Festival in gold medal fashion with four final round victories on Sunday in Mexico City. All four American competitors won gold medals in the multi-sport event, which provided a preview of next year’s Pan American Games in Toronto. 2012 Olympian Queen Underwood (Seattle, Wash.) and multi-time national champion Cam F. Awesome (Lenexa, Kansas) each earned four wins en route to Pan American Olympic Festival Championships. 2012 Olympic bronze medalist Marlen Esparza (Houston, Texas) and 2012 Olympic Champion Claressa Shields (Flint, Mich.) took three victories a piece to win their gold medals in Mexico City...Full Story

(JULY 20) The women’s bantam weight bout pitting Alisah McPhee against Peggy Maerz proved to be the most exciting bout on the undercard of the Strawson Boxing promotion at the Port Theatre in Nanaimo BC on Friday July 18th. The fight was an interesting match up of power, which Maerz embodied, and quickness and accuracy, seen in McPhee’s punches. The momentum shifted between the two women throughout the six round bout, and as both women are British Columbia residents, the crowd was split in their support.... Full Story

AIBA Name Host Cities For 2015/16 Olympic Qualifiers

(JULY 18) The International Boxing Association (AIBA) has confirmed the results of the bidding for AIBA’s major competitions to be held in 2015 and 2016, as well as for the Olympic Qualifying Events for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.  The 2014 Women’s World Championships will take place in Jeju City, Korea in November as we previously reported, following Canada having withdrawn. ..Full Story

(JULY 14) (COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO.) – A squad of the United States’ youth boxers faced off with international foes this past week in Subotica, Serbia at the 2014 Golden Glove of Vovjodina. Bantamweight Hector Tanajara (San Antonio, Texas) led Team USA with a gold medal finish in the international tournament with three wins in Serbia. Light flyweight Thomas Blumenfeld (Albany, N.Y.) and female middleweight Martha Fabela (Oakland, Calif.) each took home silver medals while flyweight Antonio Vargas (Kissimmee, Fla.) and welterweight John Williams (Baton Rouge, La.) claimed bronze.  Full Story

(July 1) On Friday night, June 11, lightweight amateur standout Jen Hamann will make her professional debut against Ariel Beck (3-0), in a scheduled four round bout at the Little Creek Casino in Shelton, WA on a card promoted by Gary Shaw Promotions.  Hamman from Seattle, Washington, compiled an amateur record of 31-4, which included the 125 pound National Amateur Championship in 2013, and the 2013 125 pound Intercontinental championship. “It's exciting to take the step into the ring as a professional,” she said. “July 11 will be one of the most amazing experiences of my life.”....Full Story
