Two Women's Bouts in New Mexico
April 29, 2012

(APR 29) Last night at the Santa Ana Star Casino, Albuquerque, NM,  and promoted by Golden Girl Promotions/ and Golden Boy, Brandi Montoya, 117, won a six-round una. dec. over Natalie Roy, 117. In a second bout, Heather Clark, 124 won by a four-round split decision over Chavira Jack, 125.

Serrano Comes up Short in Sweden

(APR 28) Last night in Sweden, Amanda Serrano (14-1-1, 9 KOs) lost a unanimous decision against Frida Wallberg (11-0, 2 KOs) for the WBC Lightweight world title. Scorecards read 96-94, 97-93, and 98-92. "I gave it my all," said Serrano. "I know I landed some good shots in the fight and I'm not ashamed of my performance. Frida Wallberg is a great fighter and I take nothing away from her victory. I'm going to bounce back from this bump in the road and work my way back to the top. Anna Laura Esteche KO’s Garino, Set to Challenge for WBO Strap

(APR 28) Last night at the Ce.De.M. N° 2, Caseros, Buenos Aires, Argentina, Anna Laura Esteche improved her record to (6-1, 2 KO) with a brutal once punch knockout of Betina Gabriela Garino , (now 15-13-2, 2 KO). Both women hail from Buenos Aires, Argentina. Esteche took immediate control of the fight with a systematic jab. Garino’s first attempt to press the action saw her eating a left hook. Less than a minute into the first round Esteche retreated to a corner, allowing Garino to again try an aggressive approach. Again Esteche answered, this time with a right hook. (APR 24)  If sports were months, boxing would be April, which T. S. Eliot labeled as the "cruelest month." That's because even the rare "feel good" tales in the sport have a hard edge to them. This one is about the Lampkins, father and son, out of a once great fight town, Portland, OR. The son, at 18, commenced a four year amateur career that took him to national prominence and, two weeks ago, at age 28, began a comeback with his debut bout as a professional boxer. The back story is of the father, one of the top ranked lightweight fighters of the 1970s, who stormed out of the clean, clear air of the Northwest and fought his way to the heat and humidity of Panama in a valiant attempt to unseat a champion who may have been the best lightweight of all time.  Last night at the Sport and Congress Center, Schwerin, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany, Ina Menzer, 126, of Germany, won an eight-round non-title bout against Doris Koehler, 124½, Vienna, Australia, with a unanimous decision. In a six-round bout, at the Polideportivo del Barrio El Tesoro, in Malambo, Colombia, Calixta Salgado, moved her boxing record to 3-0, (2KO), when she defeated Yesica Perez (photo), now 1-6-1 (1KO), of Barranquilla, Colombia, by a unanimous decision.  On Friday night, Centro Cosmopolita Unión y Progreso, Roldán,  Santa Fe, Argentina,  Victoria Bustos, 137¾, now 4-0, and still undefeated, won a four round unanimous decision over late replacement Roxana Betrix Laborde, 138¾,  Both boxers are from Argentina. 

Prazak Wins by a decision over Zarika

(APR 21) Last night at the Grand Star Receptions, Victoria, Australia, Diana Prazak successfully defended her WIBA super featherweight belt against Fatuma Zarika, when she defeated Zarika by a 10-round unanimous decision. In another bout, Sylvia Schiavoni and Natasha Bremer fought to a four-round draw in the super bantamweight division.

(APR 15)  On Friday night at the Lanxess-Arena, Cologne, Germany, Nadia Raoui, of Germany, won a 10-round unanimous decision over Eileen Olszewski. Raoui was defending her WIBA flyweight title. This was a rematch for the two, when in their first fight they fought to a draw.

(APR 14)  Yesterday at the 17th Annual Women's Luncheon, at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel, in New York, Amanda "The Real Deal" Serrano was honored when she was awarded the 2012 El Diario Latina Outstanding Woman in Sport Award.  Serrano told WBAN was she was very honored to be picked, and she said that she felt that the win was a "great gift"  as to what she has been awarded for in the sport as of late.  Some of you may not know this but Serrano...Full Story with photos

Shibata Wins by Decision over Cho-Rong Son

(APR 13)  On April 10, 2012, at Korakuen Hall, in Tokyo, Japan,
Naoko Shibata won an eight-round unanimous (79-73, 79-73, 78-74)
decision over Cho-Rong Son of South Korea. There were no knockdowns but Shibata completely dominated the bout and successfully defended her OPBF title.  The OPBF had decided reduction of the number of rounds for Female title fights (10 to 8 rounds) in last December.  From 2012, all OPBF female title fights schedule 2 minutes x 8 rounds. (APR 13) Earlier today WBAN received a press release on an upcoming title fight that will feature Peru's boxing star Kina Malpartida in a WBA Super Featherweight World title bout on May 19th.  The bout will take place in conjunction with the WBA KO Drugs campaign, at the Miguel Grau Coliseum in the El Callao region of Peru. Instead of telling who Kina IS fighting on that date, I will list for you who she is NOT fighting.  There are FORTY-TWO female boxers ranked HIGHER than Kina's opponent.  ..Full Story

(COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO) – The United States national anthem was a familiar melody on Saturday night at the NAV Centre in Cornwall, Ontario, Canada following Team USA’s six gold medal performances at the 2012 Women’s Continental Championships. Behind the Scenes at the "Battle at the Boat"

(APR 7)  Last Saturday night on the "Battle at the Boat" card, Promoted by Halquist Productions, took place at the Emerald Queen Casino, in Tacoma, Washington.  I decided at the last moment to cover this event when I found out that there would be a female bout on the card, featuring Sarah Pucek and Lisette Medal on the undercard.  I was also pleasantly surprised to find out that Ray Lampkin Jr., son of Ray "Lightening" Lampkin who was a top-noted boxer in the past, and who had fought the likes of Roberto Duran.  To throw a little icing on the cake at ..Full Story with HUGE Photo Gallery and Flash photo Slideshow

(APR 3) Just over two weeks ago Bolton Wanderers midfielder Fabrice Muamba suffered a Sudden Cardiac Arrest and collapsed during his team's FA Cup tie with Tottenham Hotspurs, at White Hart Lane. No surprise this tragic incident grabbed the headlines around the world and has continued to do so on a daily basis.  The match was rightly abandoned, as both teams' doctors spent around ten minutes treating the 23 year old on the pitch in front of around 35,000 stunned fans and millions of viewers around the World.....Full Story

(APR 3) On Saturday night, at the Gimnasio Auditorio in Los Cabos, Mexico, there were two women's bouts on the card.  In one bout, Ana Maria Torres (28-3-1, 16KOs) stopped Colombian fighter Maria Andrea Miranda (14-8) in the fourth round to retain her super flyweight championship.
