More than Thirty Young Boxers Take Gold Medals at the First-ever USA Boxing Prep National Championships
by Julie Goldsticker
June 12, 2015

(CHARLESTON, W. VA.) – Thirty-two young boxers closed their run in the first-ever Prep National Championships with gold medal victories on Friday afternoon in Charleston, W. Va. While the youngest champions boxed in final round competition, top athletes in the junior age group faced off in semifinal round action.

Two Junior World Champions made their first appearance of the 2015 Junior Olympic National Championships on Friday, boxing in semifinal round competition. Both light flyweight Heaven Garcia (El Monte, Calif.) and Lupe Gutierrez (Sacramento, Calif.) picked up where they left off at the World Championships in Taiwan, taking convincing victories.

The junior men's division boasted several action-packed bouts in the day's early action. Featherweight Joseph Adorno (Philadelphia, Pa.) and lightweight Harley Maderos (Brooklyn, N.Y.) advanced to Saturday's final round with back-to-back victories in the center ring at the Charleston Civic Center. Junior Open champion Brandun Lee (Coachella, Calif.) moved on to final round competition in short order, taking a TKO win in the first round of his welterweight bout. Heavyweight Richard Torrez (Tulare, Calif.) defeated fellow California native Roland Lemus (Los Angeles, Calif.) in their match-up to move on to a championship round match-up with Kashaun Davis (Pearl, Miss.).

Five peewee and bantamweight division athletes received Outstanding Boxer awards in their respective divisions at the close of Friday's action. Mason Vela (Laredo, Texas), Jesus Martinez (San Antonio, Texas), Isabell Vasquez (Orlando, Fla.), Randi Griffith (Gouvernour, N.Y.) and Tyshawn Denson (Akron, Ohio) all received won top boxer honors.

Twenty-one bouts of final round action will close the event on Saturday at the Charleston Civic Center with 20 contests taking place in the junior division and one match in the intermediate age group.  Saturday's championship round competition will begin at noon and tickets are available at the door for only $10.

USA Boxing’s Junior Olympic program is a critical developmental pipeline for the organization and has consistently produced future Olympians and professional world champions. The last two Olympic gold medalists from the United States, Claressa Shields and Andre Ward both took part in the event before going on to Olympic glory.
