USA Boxing’s Future Stars Open 2015 Competition at the 2015 Junior Open and Youth National Championships in Reno, Nevada
by Julie Goldsticker
January 6, 2015

(JAN 6) (RENO, NEVADA.) – For the third straight year, USA Boxing’s future stars are kicking off the domestic calendar in Reno, Nev. The 2015 USA Boxing Junior Open and Youth National Championships opened preliminary round competition on Monday at the Grand Sierra Resort in Reno, Nev., with a full day of boxing action. The 2015 event boasts the largest turnout in the tournament’s history with over 300 athletes vying for gold medals and a berth on USA Boxing’s junior and youth national teams.

The junior division athletes will compete in early session action throughout the week and the younger age division competed in 19 bouts on Monday. Two returning champions earned preliminary wins in the first session of the tournament at the Grand Sierra Resort. 2014 featherweight champion and outstanding boxer Diana Estrada (Hillsboro, Ore.) won a unanimous decision over Jeimy Flores (Houston, Texas) in her 2015 event opener. Fellow champion Keyshawn Davis (Norfolk, Va.) took a first round win on Monday as well. Davis defeated Jaycob Ramos (Dallas, Texas) in light bantamweight competition to advance in the tournament.

Two-time World Champion Shakur Stevenson (Newark, N.J.) stepped in to the ring for the first time since winning gold at the Youth Olympic Games on Monday night, but the 17-year-old showed no signs of ring rust in his bantamweight bout with Fabian Canales (Houston, Texas). Stevenson took a TKO victory in the second round to set up a showdown with fellow Junior World Championships medalist and two-time Junior open champion Daniel Gonzalez (Moreno Valley, Calif.) on Tuesday.

Two-time Junior Open champion Devin Haney (Las Vegas, Nev.) enjoyed his first win in the youth division, taking a 3-0 decision over Daiyaan Butt (Havertown, Pa.) in the lightweight division.

In flyweight action, 2014 champion Nicholas Sullivan (Norfolk, Va.) won a unanimous decision over Angel Moreno (Los Angeles, Calif.) to move on in tournament competition.

2015 Junior Open and Youth National Championships preliminary competition will continue on Tuesday with junior division bouts at noon and the youth division action at 5 p.m. For full tournament brackets, bout sheets and results, go to usaboxing.org.
