A Full Day of Quarterfinal Action is Contested at the 2013 Junior Olympic National Championships
by Julie Goldsticker
June 28, 2013

(JUNE 28) – The second day of competition at the 2013 Junior Olympic National Championships featured quarterfinal contests with all of the boxers vying for a spot in the semifinal round at the Arthur R. Outlaw Convention Center in Mobile, Ala. Fifty-seven boxers advanced in the competition with wins in Thursday’s quarterfinal action.

A crowd-pleasing female bout highlighted the afternoon action with bantamweight Jayda Thomas (Detroit, Mich.) impressing the judges and fans alike with her high punch output. She came out flying in the first round, throwing non-stop and continued to land shots en route to a 3-0 win over Mariah Leon (Lubbock, Texas). She will face Katrina Nahe (Antioch, Calif.) in tomorrow’s semifinals. On the opposite side of the bracket, defending champion Melody Montes (Kissimmee, Fla.) defeated Junior World Team Open Champion Jessica Galvez (Reno, Nev.) to join Thomas and Nahe in the semifinals.

Male lightweight Cole Dante (Honolulu, Hawaii) enjoyed better luck than his twin brother in his first bout at the 2013 Junior Olympic National Championships. Dante won a unanimous decision over Jonathan Jarabek (Brighton, Colo.) in their quarterfinal match-up to move to a semifinal contest with Andres Cortes (Henderson, Nev.). Junior World Team Open champion Keoni Adric, Jr. (Haleima, Hawaii) earned his second victory of the tournament in his lightweight quarterfinal bout to advance to Friday’s action as well.

In middleweight action, Junior World Team Open champion Suray Mahmutovic (Daly City, Calif.) utilized his extensive height advantage to win his first bout of the tournament over Armando Gaytan (Phoenix, Ariz.). Mahmutovic claimed a 3-0 victory to advance to a semifinal showdown with Veles Cup team member Manjaro Hills, Jr. (Baker, La.) on Friday.

The opening session concluded with an engaging bout between Malik Titus (Baltimore, Md.) and Lorenzo Benavidez (Albuquerque, N.M.). The contest resembled a David and Goliath match-up with Titus enjoying an 18-inch height advantage over the game Benavidez. With the crowd cheering him on, Benavidez never stopped coming forward, looking for spots to land on the towering Titus. Yet Titus stuck to his game plan and won a 3-0 decision over Benavidez, who won over the hearts of everyone watching the bout.

Junior World Team Open and Victory Day Tournament champion Shakur Stevenson (Newark, N.J.) made his 2013 Junior Olympic National Championships debut on Thursday evening. Stevenson was victorious in his opener, winning a 3-0 decision over Marco Diaz (Palm Bay, Fla.). Stevenson will take on Victor Morales (Vancouver, Wash.) in flyweight semifinal competition tomorrow.

Defending flyweight champion Isidro Ochoa (Fresno, Calif.) moved up to the featherweight division for the 2013 event but he continued his success in his new weight class on Thursday. Ochoa defeated Troy Isley (Alexandria, Va.) by unanimous decision in quarterfinal action. He will battle Gage Campbell (Wauseon, Ohio) in the semifinals on Friday for a return trip to the finals.

In female featherweight competition, Zoe Glass (Lansing, Mich.) defeated returning champion Akemi Collazo (San Antonio, Texas) to advance to semifinal round competition. Glass will face off with Anna Crutchfield (Greenville, S.C.) in the semifinals on Friday.

A second Junior World Team Open titlist enjoyed a victorious debut in the light welterweight division. Brandon Trejo (Napa, Calif.) claimed a unanimous decision win over Money Powell (Columbus, Ga.) in their quarterfinal contest. Trejo will look to duplicate his victory in the semifinal round when he challenges Mark Dawson (Philadelphia, Pa.)

Semifinal action will be contested at noon and 6 p.m. on Friday at the Arthur R. Outlaw Convention Center in Mobile, Ala. Full tournament brackets and bout sheets can be found on USA Boxing's website at usaboxing.org.
