Garside Returns to Duncan, B.C.
By Margaret Canty
May 23, 2009

(MAY 23) Border City's Jeannine "Heartless" Garside, a Duncan-born-and-raised boxer, is set to fight for a title in front of a home crowd at the Island Savings Centre. Garside will take on Brooklyn's Dominga Olivo for the WBC International Featherweight Title on June 6.

"This is the first time this has ever happened on Vancouver Island, let alone in Duncan," said Wally Petrovic, owner of Final Round Martial Arts centre, and the man who is bringing the bout to Duncan. "This is one of the biggest fights we've ever put on."

Now residing in Windsor, Ont., Garside, who turned 31 on April 14, still has plenty of friends and family in Duncan, and Petrovic knows she'll make for a hot ticket in her first fight at home since her amateur debut in 1997.

"Jeannine is a big draw, especially here, because she was born and raised in Duncan," he said. Garside's record stands at seven wins, three losses and one draw, with three knockouts. Her last bout was a Dec. 17 fixture in Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, which ended in a controversial win by hometown favourite Irma Balijagic-Adler -- and the loss of Garside's Women's International Boxing Association title.

Petrovic has known Garside since she took up the sport of boxing more than a decade ago. "I've known her since she was an amateur," he said. "She used to spar with one of my kickboxers. She was always an amazing body-puncher. She has real hard punching power. She's a tough person. It doesn't matter who she fights, it'll be tough for her opponent."

Olivo, 37, has a record of seven wins, four losses and one draw.
