Amateur Boxing Action in Wedel
Photos/Coverage
by Torben L. Of Denmark
March 12, 2009

(MAR 12) Two Hamburg amateur boxing clubs, BC Hanseat and TSV Wedel, hosted an all female boxing tournament last weekend in the Hamburg suburb Wedel. The tournament attracted more than 60 girls and women from Germany, Switzerland and The Netherlands.

The fans were treated to 33 bouts over the two days. The boxers ranged from 13 year olds to experienced seniors with 60+ bouts on their record list. Many of fighters made their ring debut or had only 1-2 bouts experince, however, they generally showed very good ringcraft; a proof of the good and consciensous work in the amateur clubs. The tournament also offered competition by some of the top class competors. The highlight was a highly competitive fight between 2007 European Champion Sandra Brügger of Switzerland vs European Silv er medal winner the same year, Olivia Luczak in the welterweight division. The Swiss champion won the bout, although it brought on strong disapproval of the Luczak corner.

All in all it was a very successful tournament. Former multi- times German champion, and one of the tournament organizers, Sonja Dürr is confident that the tournament will be repeated next year, and urged the competitors and officials to mark up the weekend March 6-7, in their 2010 calendar.
