Just another unfair decision in Boxing
By Bonnie Canino

September 3, 2008

(SEPT 3) As my experience in the boxing world with another unfair decision seems to be most common these days and it looks like some boxing commissions are sucking up to the boxing promoters having their hometown boxer wins fights where they are not deserved, or Referees stepping in too early.

Opponents for hometown boxers know when they go into the hometown favorite that they have to take the fight away from the hometown boxer, just like a world title fight you have to take that title away from the champion. When opponent does it, it should be well deserved. Hometown boxer didn’t step up that night and should not be gratified with a win on their performance and record.

These well-deserved boxers had trained hard and did everything to be the winner of their fight.

It gets me sick and sicker seeing right in front of my eyes Officials of fights doing that just because the hometown boxers and promoters brings in their pay checks in when boxing shows done and full of audiences.

That exactly what it seemed to be the case at the Friday Night Fights that took place at the Mohegan Sun in Connecticut last Friday night [August 29, 2008]. Yvonne Reis was schedule to fight the hometown favorite Addy Irizarry under Jimmy Burchfield Promotions. Both girls weighed in at 145 and ½. It was on the under card of the main show on ESPN II which was not schedule to be televised.

Yvonne was nervous before the fight, just because she didn’t want another lost to blemish her record. She knew we were going to the hometown boxers door step to fight and she knew she had to be at her best to impressed and take the fight away from the hometown boxer. Yvonne had also expressed earlier at the weight in to the Mohegan Sun Boxing Commission on fair decisions.

Yvonne went out to the ring focus, and pumped. She fought doing everything good except not knocking out her hometown boxer. Yvonne showed great skills inside and outside having good defense and busy throwing bunches of punches which out landed her hometown boxers, besides keeping hometown boxer fans quite most of the fight. I didn’t have to say much to Yvonne in the corner except like always you try to push your boxers to their extreme. She was standing up with in 30 seconds ready to take it away from the hometown boxer each round.

At the end of the fight both girls were brought to the middle of the ring where the scores were read out loud reading 40-36, 40-36, 39-37 to the hometown boxer. It used of been the other way having Yvonne win it. Besides score like that none of the rounds for Yvonne, give me a break. What fight were they watching?

You can tell from Yvonne face her spirit was crushed. What could I tell Yvonne? I wanted to blow, but it wouldn’t be wised next thing you know you are arrested and in Jail, besides a lifetime suspension from the commission. Yvonne did have a lot of people to come up to her saying she won that fight, even the Mayor of the town who attended the boxing show apologize to her.

There was another similar case that night and it was on ESPN II.

On Teddy scorecard challenger Emmanuel Nwodo was up on the four rounds, having a good lead with a knock down to hometown boxer. It all started with a head butt to the challenger nose, which got busted was never announced to the Judges or doctors. Hometown boxer fans got excited. A fight between the two erupted. Challenger got caught, but was still punching back. The Referee got excited and decided to jump in and stops the fight. With the Challenger appearance with a bloody nose and a test of punches exchanging. It was all too early. One little war and was over. This was a Title fight. These two boxers weren’t beginners.

You Love boxing, but this is the side that’s ugly and one you hate.

Who ever did the reporting for Fight News articles on the fights were one sided on his story seeming to be all for Burchfield boxers.

This is where boxing losing it’s prestige with the audience view and people are turning to others sports like MMA Fighting that the real fighter has more chance to wins fair. If boxing doesn’t clean it act up.

I have been to some good states like New Mexico, Louisiana, Florida, Texas, and Nevada. Some of the other states that has not been fair that’s on the list Mohegan Sun, Michigan, N. Carolinas, besides some of the other Countries around the world.

Yvonne asked me where does she go from here?

In the end I can only say to her Just keep going until it be hearten you. I wanted to cry for her, so instead I thought I’d write this short story. The sad thing is it doesn’t really go anywhere, except let the people know of the unfair decision with the boxing commission at the Mohegan Sun Casino in Connecticut. What we do for the love of the sport of boxing. Just another day passes by.
