A major sporting event is set to pack a real punch in Liverpool.  The city hosts the 2008 Women's European Union Amateur Boxing Championships next week, bringing Europe's finest female boxers to Liverpool.

It's a major coup for Liverpool, which is the first ever UK city to host the championships.

Fans will be able to see pugilists from 17 European nations competing in the event at Greenbank Sports Academy, South Liverpool, from 4-9 August.

The England team will be represented by 11 women from across the country, including a trio of Liverpool fighters - the newly-crowned Novice ABA champion Lydia Morgan and double ABA champions Anastasia Cousins and Natasha Jonas.

Also appearing will be World Champion Katie Taylor from Ireland, who is the highest paid sportswoman in her country.

There has been a huge growth in women's boxing across the world in recent years, with bi-annual European and World Championships, and increasing indications of the sport being included in the Olympic Games.

Liverpool City Council Leader, Councillor Warren Bradley, said: "Liverpool is at the forefront of boxing, producing a huge number of world class fighters. We're committed to developing the sport further, breaking down barriers and making it accessible for all.

"Hosting the 2008 Women's EU Boxing Championships is the latest boxing success for Liverpool and further cements our position as a city of sporting excellence and opportunity.

"I'm delighted that Liverpool has such a strong presence in the England team, and I'd like to wish Anastasia, Lydia and Natasha - and all the boxers competing at these Championships - every success. It will be a fantastic event."

Monday 4 - Thursday 6 August will see the boxers competing in their preliminary, quarter-final and semi-final bouts. Each session starts at 6pm, with tickets priced at £5 for adults and £2 for under 16s.

Friday 8 August is a rest day, before the finals get underway at 2pm on Saturday 9 August. Tickets for the finals are £10 for adults and £4 for under 16s

For further details and ticket bookings, please call 0151 233 6336. Tickets can also be purchased from the venue on the day.
