Taylor to Defend European Title"
by Bernard O'Neill
October 13, 2007

(OCT 13) Reigning World and back-to-back European lightweight champion Katie Taylor reckons that the Russians,Turks and Czechs will provide tough opposition at the 2007 European Championships which begin in Denmark on Sunday.

The 21 year old, who will be targeting her third European title on the trot in Vejle, flies out to Denmark today (October 12th) and could be in the ring on Monday.

Taylor finished up her training camp in Oslo Norway last weekend and will be hoping that her preparations in Land of the Midnight Sun will be a lucky omen ahead of the Europeans.

The world number one was in training camp in Norway last year before she won her second European title in a row in after stopping the then World Champion, Tationa Chalay from Russia, on the 15 point rule (18-3) in the 60Kg final in Warsaw Poland.

Taylor then reached the Venus Cup final in Vejle in October 2006,but a facial injury forced her to pull out of her 60Kg final with Lucie Beatued of France.

However, a month later Taylor, from the St Fergal's club in Bray, claimed the World Lightweight title in New Delhi India.

Commentating on her European title defence, Taylor, who will have her dad and coach Peter and Pat Ryan in her corner in Vejle, said her objective is to retain her title.

She said: "I have trained very hard for the European Championships and the training camp in Norway was ideal and we got a lot of work done out there.

"I am not sure who the Russians will enter in the lightweight Division, but no matter who they enter she will be strong and I believe the Czechs and the Turks will be difficult to beat also.

"My objective in Denmark is to retain my title and I am confident that I can do that, but I won't be taking anything for granted as it will be a very competitive tournament."
