Watsonville Hosts Carina Moreno Day
Story by Alan Messick
June 20, 2007

(JUN 20) Yesterday, on June 19th, the City of Watsonville, California, presented Carina Moreno Day.  The event at Watsonville City Hall honored the 25-year-old fighter, whose accomplishments include winning the WBC strawweight world title on May 17 at Tachi Palace Hotel and Casino in Lemoore, California. Attendees included City of Watsonville officials, Moreno's manager/ trainer Rick Noble, and her family and friends. Moreno resides and trains in Watsonville, a small coastal town in central California.

Moreno was recognized for her success in amateur and professional boxing levels. After earning an amateur record of 36-2, her current professional record is 13-1 with 4 KO's. In addition to her recent WBC world title, she was named NABF Female Fighter of the Year, and captured the NABF light flyweight crown in 2006. She was named WBAN's June 2007 Fighter of the Month.

Moreno has been Regina Halmich's sparring partner twice in Germany,  and is hopeful of fighting Halmich.  Moreno is scheduled to fight in Lemoore on September 27 against a top-ten world-ranked opponent.

[Note: In the local news, it has been reported that Moreno is the first world champion to come out of Watsonville.]
