Women’s Boxing Action on the “Best Damn Sports Show Period”!
March 23, 2007

(MAR 23) Last night in front of a sold-out crowd, at the Isleta Casino, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, there were three women world title bouts televised on Fox Sports Net’s “Best Damn Sports Show Period”.

In the first bout, veteran boxer Kelsey Jeffries, 123, of Gilroy, California, successfully defended her IFBA Featherweight world title against Rhonda Luna, 124, of Rowland Heights, California, winning by a 10-round split decision.

This bout was a non-stop action bout, with Luna being the heavier hitter, and Jeffries throwing the sharper and quicker punches. Both boxers threw nice combinations, effective jabs and body shots. In the fourth round, Luna developed a fairly large lump on her forehead, which seemed to get larger as the fight continued. The seventh round was one of the most “brawling rounds” of the fight, with the two getting in a clash at the end of the round, throwing some wild exchanges. Final judges’ scores were 97-93 Jeffries, 96-94 Luna, and 96-94 Jeffries.

In a second title bout, in a rematch, Jackie Chavez, 122, of Los Lunas, New Mexico, faced Southpaw Lisa “Bad News” Brown, 122, of Ontario, Canada. Chavez was defending her IFBA Jr. Featherweight world title against Brown this night. But, Chavez would not hold onto that title, when Brown defeated her by a 10-round unanimous decision. Final judges’ scores were 99-91, 97-93, and 97-94. The best round of the fight was in the fifth, when Chavez came alive at the end of the round, throwing a barrage of sharp combos with Brown pinned near the ropes.

In the main event, Holly Holm, 143 ¼, Albuquerque, NM, and Ann Marie Saccurato, 141, White Plains, New York made history when they fought for six (IFBA, WIBA, GBU, WBC, IBA, WBA) welterweight world title belts. Holm and Saccurato did not disappoint boxing fans, when they had an all-out war for ten rounds. Holms won the 10-round unification title bout by a unanimous decision. Final judges’ scores were 98-91, 97-92, 97-92.
