Elena “Baby Doll” Reid and Kaliesha
“Wild Wild” West will tangle on Friday Dec. 8, at the Florentine
Gardens club in El Monte, California.
Baby Doll - Elena Reid
Though it’s merely an exhibition match because of the disparity in
weight, expect extreme fireworks between the two female pugilists.
“I can’t wait to fight her. She’s a world champion. I want to see
how far I have to go to be a world champion myself,” said West
(5-0), a bantamweight contender who lives in Moreno Valley. “I’m
bigger but she’s a world champion.”
Reid said the crowd will not get a pitty-pat affair.
“Women don’t pitty-pat,” said Reid (18-3-5), the current WIBA
flyweight world champion. “We take even the exhibitions seriously
because of the fans. We want everyone to take women boxing
seriously.”
Though Reid is a flyweight with six years of pro experience, she
expects an even fight with West who is ranked number seven in the
world as a bantamweight.
“She has a lot of amateur boxing experience so that makes us even,”
said Reid. “I know she hits hard so it’s going to be a lot of fun.”
West recently beat five-time National Amateur champion Stella Nijof
in Monterey last month. Reid captured the flyweight world title last
August against Mary Ortega.
“People are going to get their money’s worth,” said Reid, who is now
promoted by a California-based group that also promotes the Long
Beach Ice Dogs. “This is my first fight in California.”
West said she expects a war despite it being an exhibition.
“I’m not going in there to dance around,” said West who has been
compared by many to a younger Melinda Cooper. “We’re going to be
doing some serious exchanges.”
